Tranny Maintenance Question

Called the dealer this morning about having the tranny maintenance done, (flush, ect), truck will roll 46,000 here in the next week or so. The service guy, I deal a lot with him, told me they DO NOT change the filter during the process. Said and I quote, "with the conditioners and cleaning agents the filter change is not needed".

 

Long story short I was speachless. If this is true, please someone explain to me why. Filter has never been changed to my knowledge. I bought it Certified used with 30,000 on it from this dealer.

He is probably right about the filter not being clogged, but that doesn't change the fact that it needs to be changed in the process. Sounds lazy to me, it ain't nothing to get under the pickup and just change the fluid. I'd find someone who can do it right the first time, and not wait until the filter does eventually got stopped up. The strongest conditioners in the world aren't gonna make dirt just disappear out of the filter. If you don't change the filter, you run a high risk of restricting tranny fluid from being pumped where it needs to go. They also need to drop the pan and clean the magnet. Would you change engine oil without changing filter?

No I agree completely. That is what I am saying. I thought it was ridiculous. I would just do a pan drop and filter change in the driveway but I want everything flushed out. A pan drop will not loose all old fluid. Anyone have the part number so I can make sure to pick one up so I dont pay dealer cost. I'll give it to them and make sure they do it.

The dealer I use for maintenance didn't want to change the filter either...they either did a flush or a pan drop/change/filter, according to which SA you got (worst case, you got flush available only, filter claimed to be non-serviceable ) My 04 Monte Carlo, overmaintained, got a flush the first 30,000 miles, fluid+filter change the next 30,000, then another flush a week or so before I traded it it. 118,000 miles when I broke down and traded it for the Silvy, and it never gave me any trouble.
