Hey guys (and gals I suppose), I stumbled across this site looking for an answer to this question...and boy am I glad I did! There's so much great information on here.

Anyway, I'm picking up a 2008 Sierra Denali from the dealer tomorrow and was wondering about premium fuel. Should I switch to using premium fuel even if the previous owner has been running regular octane for the last couple of years? I still have to ask the salesman if he knows whether they did or not. If the previous owner has been using regular fuel, what damage might this have caused (if anything)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I can tell you that premium is recommended for the 2008 as I currently own one. I have been told that you can run 87 in them and wont have any problems just may lose a little power. I figured for the cost difference per tank I miight as well just stay on the safe side and run premium.

I bought a 96 suburban about 2 years ago, pretty sure the previous owners jsut ran regular gas in it, and I did for the first year as well. I switched to premium sometime last fall I think because I was having issues with the truck not wanting to start in the winter. After a few months I noticed I was getting a lot better fuel mileage. I don't know about power because the truck had plenty already, but I was surprised to see the increased fuel mileage.

I know it's not a Denali, or a 2008, but hopefully it helps. I would think even if it ran regular before, if you run premium for awhile eventually it'll clean out some of the gunk from the regular.

Ok, thanks! I don't have a problem running premium as the cost per tank really doesn't make too much of a difference when you're paying quite a bit for the truck itself. I just don't know if its good to swith to using premium after the original owner has (possibly) been using regular for the the last few years.

Ok, so you haven't had any problems switching at all then. I just want to make sure it won't have a negative effect if I switch to premium and its been running on regular for the entire engine life.

Kiff,

You should experience no problems. I would expect it might improve performance and mileage.

A heartfelt welcome to the forum. There are lots of very helpful and friendly folks here.

PS. We need photos of your new rig. No photos, it doesn't exist!!!!

Thanks for the help Steve! I'm going to start filling it with premium then (might be around $15-$20 more per tank, here in Canada).

Yeah, I only browsed a few of the pages when I searched the forum to see if my question had already been answered - there's so much helpful content on here.

I pick the new truck up tomorrow - I'll make sure it's spotless and snap a good picture of it! Thanks again.

I don't know about an '08 denali....but my older silverado says in the owners manual that it is designed for 87. I've never put premium in it. I think most of the time it's not worth the extra cost. Could be with some vehicals though I guess.

$15-$20 MORE PER TANK, how much are you paying for gas? :uhoh:

Price difference here in Cali is 10-15 cents a gal. Times the max of 25 gals =$3.75 per tank

Regular gas where I live is close to $1/Litre - Premium is anywhere between 15-20 cents more per LITRE (there's approx. 3.8 litres in 1 gallon). I believe the fuel tank on this vehicle is 26 gal or 98 litres. That works out to $15 - $20 more per fill-up. Americans have much better gas prices than most Canadians!!
