sooo whats the external and internal "through bolts"? Having trouble, didn't realize there would be so much variance in price on these things. I am probably going to go middle of the road or cheap as possible.

Your truck came with a gear reduction starter and needs to be replaced with the same. Go with a AC Delco rebuilt or new starter.

I replaced my starter a month ago. First time I've had a starter go out in 30 years. Anyway I called the local GM dealer and a new AC Delco starter was 427 bucks with a 12 month warrenty. I called Autozone and a rebuilt in Mexco AC Delco starter was 184 bucks warrented for as long as I own the truck. Damn that was a hard decision. The rebuilt starter went on and I have had no issues with it.

Is the starter really held on by only 3 bolts on these trucks? 2 mounting bolts + and bolt connected to transmission bellhousing cover

Haynes manual is wonderfully absent of how to remove the solenoid shield as well.....also, there is no purple wire! they are totally sheathed.

I just loosened the 2 mounting bolts and also the bellhousing cover bolt just to prep the removal and bench-test of the starter.

Sooo....is it normal for the bellhousing cover bolt to be not even finger tight? I thought I didn't have the right socket on but the darn thing wasn't torqued on at all, i could literally just move it w/ my fingers without a socket to break it, and here I am thinkign I have to PB blast everything for hours just to get ready to work.....

I found the ACDELCO model I wanted, I'm going to start a seperate more focused topic on replacing the starter. I have some questions before I simply remove it.

If you'd like to see the GM Serv Info on this procedure send me a PM w/ your email address....

I have a friend who is a AC Delco dealer and was a parts manager for a Chevy dealer which he left to open his own repair center. I know this to be true and he has shown me many times, the same starter or other part from AC Delco will always cost a fraction of what the GM dealer will sell it for and it will be exactly the same although coming from different warehouses.
