Leveling Kit Shim Thickness?

Recommended Posts

I have a machine shop at my disposal and would like to make a kit for my truck, similar to a RC. Can anyone tell me the thickness of the shim on a 1.5" or 2" kit? Sorry to ask another Leveling kit question but after an hour of searching, I give up.

The RC 2 inch leveling kit is about 1 inch thick

I work in a machine shop and I do cad/cam so if you can give me a few days I can take the set I bought and make a print up of all the dimensions and mabye this will help anyone that wants to make there own. Just let me know.

Thanks for the info! Drawings are far more than I expected, but would make my project easier. I have not seen them in person but they seem pretty simple.

If I understand what or how these "leveling kits" work - the one's I've seen - do so by raising the front of the truck {yes/no?}

So I wonder why GM set the tail higher to begin with. Is it set higher so that the truck is level when the bed is loaded? Or was the front lowered a couple inches to improve the aerodynamics and thus the gas mileage or handling at higher speeds?

It would be very interesting if someone kept fairly accurate records of mpg on their trucks both before and after "leveling" them by raising the front of the truck.

Personally - for a daily driver I'd rather lower the rear, than raise the front.

Hi everybody, new on the forum.

Planning to make my leveling kit too... What type of material should I use to build this? Don't know what stuff the real kits are made of... :D I was thinkin about using aluminum.

Another thing: Does anybody know or could give me the dimensions of one of those shims (ext. diameter, int. diam, radius for the 6 holes, etc...) I would save some precious time disassembling/reassembling my front suspension only to get those measurements.

Thanks

What is so hard about spending the $60 for the RC kit? You have to realize if your backyard attemtp goes wrong your putting alot of people at risk. Dont get me wrong, im all about DIY stuff but some things are better left to the pros.

Well you know it's not a question about spending 60$... It's just about doin' it. I don't see many issues with the "fabrication" aspect of the project, I mean not as much than the "installation" part. I see a lot of members here that installed their kit and I didn't heard about security issues... I don't know, Going to think about it... you may got a point here. :D

I, too, work with CAD/CAM at a fab shop and already have made my parts. Installing them this week. Upper spacer is 3/4" HR steel and the lower I made 1/4" thick. (others are 3/8). The lower strut hinge location is almost centered between the a-arm frame pivot and ball joint.....sooo...1/2" = 1". Both were cut on the plasma table. I have detailed drawings to post, and will post them after the install. I would hate to have something be off by a fraction of an inch and have someone copy it. Have pics of the process as well.

If your wondering about the material,..most manufacturers use aluminum because it "machines" well in a CNC mill setup. No harm in steel,..just a few extra pounds...no biggie. I chose this setup,...as "Ready lift" does to avoid cutting studs and swapping struts side to side.

...I will post dimensions after the install...

......... I hope I dont upset anyone by doing this,.....no one works for RC or Ready lift on this forum ,..do they?

This is NOT a copy of another brand,...I took all dimensions of the truck and designed accordingly.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
