Tundra Owner Looking Again At Gm/chevy Hd

New Member here...

Born and raised a Chevy man, currently own a Toyota Tundra. Tundra is a great 1/2 ton truck however we are looking to buy a larger camper and a Heavy Duty 2500 truck is in order. Looking very hard at either the new 2011 Sierra or Silverado V8 Gas. Both are very similiar but having a hard time telling the difference (if any) between the two. Any insights into either model would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

There is no difference between the Silverado and Sierra besides exterior looks. It's just a matter of personal preference. However, GMC does have an upscale Denali line which Chevrolet does not.

+1, just a preference(whether you want to call your truck a GMC Sierra or a Chevy Silverado.

Dry weight of the camper is 8,000 lbs. The Tundra GVWR is 7,100 with a GCWR of 16,000 lbs. Tundra has plenty of horsepower but is lacking in payload. With 6 people in my family, a heavy camper and all the gear, I am concerned about pushing the limits of the truck. Tundra towing package is rated at 10,300 lbs (rating is figured with one 150 lb driver and that is all)...it is the payload that is driving my decision. I am a paticipant in a Tundra forum and that is the biggest complaint of the truck...payload capacity.

Yeah, be careful pulling that camper. Someone around here wrecked on I-20 yesterday, while driving a Toyota Tundra. The trailer, which was a camper, started swaying back and forth violently causing the rear end of the truck to start swerving. He ran into the cable divider in the middle of the Interstate. The camper was demolished(looked like a car trailer). The truck was twisted 45 degrees(the back two tires were even on the road whereas the front of the truck was on its side. So, just be careful, make sure the truck you pull with is heavy and strong enough to pull your load.

Yep...safety is first and foremost...we haven't bought this new camper yet. In a position to get a bigger truck first. Our current camper is 5600 lbs and the Tundra pulls fine, but we need a bigger camper (kids growing!). Much more to pulling that just horsepower...frame, shocks, brakes, axles etc etc. I just can't decide between the Sierra or the Silverado....

why so set on a gasser? a duramax would be a better choice for towing..

A lot of people don't have the extra cash. People that say that just haven't driven the 6.0l yet.

bingo...another $8k or so for a diesel...wife says I can get a new truck...don't want to push it!! I think from what I hear and see for myself that there are only suttle appearance differences between the Sierra and the Silverado. Waiting for the 2011 GMC to hit the local dealer to check out the interior

Yea..your right at a dry weight of 8K a 3/4 ton truck is necessary.

You could put some air bags on the 1/2 ton..but you don't have a Ford..LOL

Seriously though.. a 360HP, 6-speed, 6.0 Chev in any body style would handle that weight.

I don't know what Ford has for a gasser anymore but the V-10 was a heck of a motor if

you can find one. I hear their not available anymore and are coming out with a new gas

motor that is like the chev 6.2.

Either way, you don't need a diesel.

There are no differences between the 2009 6.0 and the 2010 6.0. GM is not going to be cranking out any more performance out of that engine, it's slated for death row within the next few years, likely to be replaced by the 6.2L or a newer generation of engine. If you do get a 6.0, (it is a good engine, let me add that) consider getting a Black Bear tune. Justin will liven up the 6.0 to make it perform like a V-8 instead of a V-6.

The "new" frames on the 2011 2500 HD truck are supposed to be pretty darn good. I can also state the 6.0L gasser especially with a aftermarket tune really wakes up the motor (mine is from Charlie Wheatley). Granted mine is a 2006, but overall very happy with my truck and the motor. I will say yes the D-max is great, but if you don't tow alot of Heavy weight the 6.0L is a great motor. Also when I was looking at 2500HDs there were no "stripped down" WT or LS trucks that had a D-max, the closest I saw was a 8.1L big block WT but even that truck was $8,000 more than my truck. The D-max trucks I saw all had other options that caused the cost of the overall truck to be an average of $10-$20K more than mine. Good luck!

my 06 1500HD with 6 litre and 4 speed pulls 8k no problem, never skipped a beat. i pulled a 18k LBS trailer across town before AHAHAH, i have a set of airbags underneath, normally just put about 30-35 psi in them for a 8k lbs pull. but that time i had them at like 90 ahahah. 6 litre has alot of potential with a good tune, i have a tow haul tune which i adore and a driving tune which reeaallly woke up the beast. the duramax just isnt worth it unless you are towing everyday, or a work truck.
