Universal Joints?

Hello every one, this is my first post!

I have a V8 2004 silverado, manual transmission...and it is doing a squeaking noise only when I accelerate the truck...I hear it coming under the truck, I've asked my brother and he says that the sound comes from the universal joints, but we looked under the truck and they seems normal, can it be an internal damage or something like that?

Or what else it could be?

They could be very dry inside and beginning to squeak. If this is the case it will only get worse. They may not be to the point of being loose or clunking. One way to check is to pull the driveshaft and rotate the joints by hand. You can feel tightness or roughness

you will find one of the caps dry..

 

FYI.. I've had to replace u-joints in two of my trucks,,, and the steel driveshaft trucks,, usually those caps are held in place with nylon, that you have to heat the yoke to remove... If you see no internal type snap rings, you hafta heat the yoke..

 

If you have an aluminum driveshaft, it's just your normal internal snaprings..

The joints have dried out. AKA you need joints..

 

Providing you have an automatic which makes the test easier..... Drop directly in drive you should hear a chirp. Then back to reverse another chirp.... Bounce it back and forth... You probably can hear the chirp...... Open the door... Any noise when bouncing back and forth in gears like that that has a squeak or chirp noise its the joints..

 

U-joints should be replaced in sets. Spring for a good set..... Precision Joints is always my choice..... Get the ones with grease fittings... If you have an aluminum shaft MAKE SURE YOU TELL THE PARTS GUY... The joints are different... and have special caps tooooo.

 

OE Joints on steel shafts are sealed in place (wax, nylon what ever I have no clue never really paid attention).... You will have to heat the yoke till the caps POP out... Clean the grooves well and put the new joint in. Either in a VISE or press... NEVER HAMMER A U-JOINT OR yoke.

 

Swing bearings usually make noise on deceleration.... If you have a swing bearing it would not be a bad time to change it out of sympathy since the joints are starting to fail.

my last joint failure,,, you could only hear it(barely) in reverse, like backing up the road..

 

No slop, no clunk, no nothing..

 

But, every time,, it was ONE dry cap...
