Black Smoke

I recently purchased a 2006 Silverado 2500HD duramax and have noticed that when I accelerate to pass etc. it produces a fairly large cloud of black smoke. I have only had the truck about a month but it doesn't seem to be getting better. I don't think it has been programmed, but I am not sure. How can I determine if this is normal or something I should have checked out. It doesn't smoke when starting from a stop. I haven't pulled a load with it but so far all I can say about the truck is WOW this sucker is FAST! Strong too. I have been driving a big block gas 3500 for the last 12 years so I am a little out of touch on the diesels, but this seems to be a whole lotta truck. Any thoughts on maintenance and what to watch for will be greatly appreciated.

If it's a duramax and pours black smoke and is FAST then it more than likely has a tune on it.

Well, lets just say if the trucks programmed, its going to pour black smoke... I've never seen one from the factory that smoked :thumbs:

I agree...the truck was and still is tuned or programmed. You did not say how many miles it has or if it was a private or dealer sale.....my thoughts are you are near 40-50K, given the truck is a '06. It being programmed....I would suggest that you check out the trans fluid and see if it smells or is discoloured, chances are you will need to change out the trans fluid.

 

I know I would, not knowing why the truck was tuned. Was it owned by a young buck trying to inpress friends or was it used to increase torque for towing. Also check the front and rear diff fluids and see what they look like.

 

As for knowing if it was programmed, there are two things you can do. 1. There are programmers that actually plug into the vehicle electronics on the top of the engine and it is as simple to see it and unplug it all and replug the original plugs back together. 2. Take the truck to your local dealer and ask them to scan the trucks computers and see what it shows for a version number. It should match the version attached to the service history of the truck. I know the techs used to be able to do that at the dealership I used to work at in Alberta a few years ago.

sounds like a "dirty" tune too me bud, join duramax forum and talk to the boys on there. they can get you a good solid 90-80HP tranny safe tune that wont role the coal like a locomotive. sooo many tuners out there just dumping fuel into those diesels...makes the diesel emissions BS get even worse. sounds like a PPE tune, too much fuel not enough boost. i bet ur EGT's are thru the roof too....

Your truck has been tuned and if its dumping black smoke that bad then its a big tune, chances are that truck has been driven hard also with that tune. The Allison tranny is ok up to a 50 HP tune but after getting on it hard you will start limping the trans which means it goes into safe mode because it detected slippage and the more times it happens the more trouble your going to have, I dont mean to scare you but thats the facts unless the trans has been beefed up.

ya, i would find a professional diesel tuner that uses EFI Live to look over it, its not good running a dirty tune like that with factory fuel delivery components. remember it doesnt have to pour black smoke to be a big tune, thats just poor tuning....my buddy ran a 500 HP tune on an LMM and it barely poured any smoke. you got urself a dirty tune. you can put 80-90HP into them, but your tq strategies have to be set up properly or you will limp it.

My '05 will puff a little bit of black smoke when I punch it, but only for a second until the RPM's increase. It's totally stock.

Hard to say what you mean by a black cloud, if it's excessive then that's another story.

    • Fred was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young pullets, and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention. Vote carefully in the next election, you can't always hear the bells.
    • Can someone confirm if the GM order workbench terminal is able to validate a custom build sequence:   1) Initialize the Allocation Base: Open a new vehicle build queue, select the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD, and pick the High Country (3LZ Preferred Equipment Group).   2) Select the Diesel Powertrain: Go directly to the engine configuration screen and choose RPO code LZ0 (3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel). Ensure it maps to the MHS 10-speed automatic transmission.   3) Deploy the Seating Swap: Navigate to the Interior Options screen and enter RPO code ATT to replace the standard captain's chairs with the power-release 60/40 bench seat. Because you are not trying to force a separate luxury or air-suspension bundle, the standard, premium D07 Fixed Floor Console remains active. The system will accept this change immediately without triggering a warning message.   3)Apply Heavy-Duty Hauling Capability: Input RPO code NHT (Max Trailering Package). The commercial terminal will automatically bundle the required trailering hardware and software modules to support the diesel engine's maximum towing capacity.   5) Layer the Premium Tech and Glass: Separately add code C3U (Panoramic Power Sunroof) and code UKL (Super Cruise) to the order screen.   6) Run the Final Validation: Click the "Validate Order" button at the bottom of the interface.
    • Spent the last hour or 2 googling and reading up on the spacer thing. I don't like the loss of thread contact on the slip on spacers, but it appears you can get "extended" lug nuts that reach into the hole of the wheel to get back the lost threads. Looks like the only true hubcentric slip on spacers are at least .375". I'd want as little as I could get away with and don't want to cause other clearance issues going any thicker. Bora seems to offer what appears to be a well made .375" spacer and extended lug nuts. I searched here and did find a couple threads recommending Bora. But not cheap. By the time I buy spacers and lugs, new TPMS sensors, then pay a tire shop to install the new sensors, I suspect I'm going to be in over $400. Thinking about running out and getting some washers to put behind the wheel to see if .375" is enough to clear calipers, turn lock to lock without rubbing, and to see if the wheels/tires look strange pushed out a little. This would just be to check fitment.
    • Roadmaster makes some quality parts; I have their sway bar. I considered the RAS, but I ended up bagging. I didn't know what kind of ride I'd get with RAS, and the bags have interior jounce bumpers, so I can run 0 pounds pressure. I figured I'd have the best of normal suspension ride with assist on-demand. But it seems you got pretty much the same in one item.
