Gm Tech 2 Question

I should be receiving my Black Bear tune in the mail hopefully sometime this week. There's 2 Chevy dealerships in the area. One recently dumped Chevy and picked up Toyota. So now there is just the dealership where I bought the truck from.

For my crank relearn I'd prefer to avoid my purchase dealership if possible but being the only one in the area anymore I may have to. If it comes to it I will use them.

However, I got to thinking; there wouldn't be any problem having a GMC dealer perform the crank relearn would there. A GM Tech 2 is a GM Tech 2 whether it's a GMC or Chevy dealership or private shop. I guess the question is could I get turned down by a GMC dealership just because my truck is a Chevy? For such a small job I wouldn't think they would care what brand it was. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

BTW, I did try two local auto body shops for GM Tech 2's and both pointed me to the dealer.

Autobody shops won't have Tech 2s, most mechanic shops will though. Shoot me an email with where you are located, and I might be able to find someone in the area that can hook you up. ([email protected])

FYI: when they create the ticket at any GM dealer with your VIN on it that information will be attached to your VIN in the GM database and viewable by GM Corporate and any dealer. If you insist on having it done at a dealership your only hope is to have a tech do it "off the record" and slip him a few bucks.

The easiest way would probably be to find someone with HP Tuners or EFI Live that would be willing to do it for you. I've offered and done several for people living in my area, cost them a 6 pack

I had mine done at a mechanic shop that specializes at emissions repair. Just start calling local shops until you find one with a GM tech 2.

plus if you find a local shop you would not have to worry the update in the GM warranty system since they do not have access to it.

with my former Tech School having a Tech 2 and a Ford NGS, and Possibly a Nissan CONSULT-III, I've done a Crank Relearn on many a GM Truck. (mostly S-10s and Blazers) just watch out when the Relearn procedure ends, it requires you to floorboard the throttle during the procedure, and if you don't lift off quick enough, the RPMs will shoot for the Redline!

When I asked one shop they said they didn't have a GM Tech 2 but had an equivalent. I didn't ask if that might be HP Tuners or EFI Live. If they have an equivalent though maybe I'll take it to them and let them try.

I found two shops that I haven't contacted yet and won't be able to until Tuesday.

The both have ads with a list of services and "Computer Engine Analysis/Diagnostics" is listed in each.

I won't be able to call them until Tuesday but do yall think I have a good shot with either of these?

A Genisys will do this also........ Most high end scan tools can preform this procedure. The Pegisys does this also. But as stated above a shop that works on GM will have a TECH II in their tool box....

Called both shops today. The one in town had no Tech 2 but did have a Snap-On. I told him I'd call back later. Called the other shop in the next town over and they said they do have a Tech 2. I went ahead and scheduled with him.

I'm lined up for Friday morning. He claimed about 25-30 minutes and $35.

I appreciate all the help from everyone.

Not sure I understand? You are asking why we tune vehicles?

If that is what you are asking I would say to truly get what you paid for in your truck. I've only had my tune, just a traditional mail order tune, for about a week and I'm very pleased. The driveability difference is awesome. Before it was like you had a set group of speeds in each gear. Now I'm opened to a wide range of speeds in each gear. Also before I had quite a lag at takeoff and shifts, almost like I had a heavy load in the bed. Now I don't notice that lag at all. It goes like NOW.

It almost seems like there's a power difference just due to the driveability from the GM nannies being eliminated. Add to that a horsepower at the rear wheels increase and a fuel economy increase and I'd say it's worth it. Some folks here who have owned their BB tune for a while have claimed it to pay for itself through fuel savings.

By the way, I don't want anyone to get the idea that my truck has been "out of commission" because I haven't had a crank relearn yet. I've probably driven 200, maybe 300 miles already on it. A crank relearn is only a diagnostic to detect engine misfires. You wouldn't HAVE to get it done but you would always have a check engine light then.

It's your truck and up to you but from my experience with BlackBear I would certainly recommend them.
