Transmission Pan Or Oil Cooler?

Recommended Posts

I need to change my filter on my tranny, and since I added 35" tires and 4.56 gears I thought I should add an external cooler or deeper/finned tranny pan. Which option will be the best option? I don't want to spend a lot of cash so cheaper is better.

Could someone also tell me how to check and see if I have a tranny cooler already?

If you have a tranny cooler you should be able to see it through the grille. of the truck. if you have a towing package you probably have one. I would say add or upgrade your tranny cooler. B&M, Derale and several others make them. It should be less than $100 bucks to do it your self. A little more to have a mechanic do it for you.

I checked and I do have a tranny cooler from factory. My tranny code is M30. So anyone got a direct kit upgrade I can do that will bolt in easy to the factory one?

I second the advise to upgrade the tranny cooler rather than a finned tranny pan! The cooler will have a significant impact on your temps while the finned pan will provide only a marginal improvement. Why do you think you need to upgrade your cooler? Are you measuring high temps in the tranny now? What is your use? If you do a lot of off-road climbing, slow moving etc, you may consider just adding an electric fan to the existing or to a secondary cooler.

I added 35's and 4.56 gears, and i live in Florida. I do not have a tranny temp guage so I don't know what temp it is running.

I would like to know how to get the tranny temp to show on the DIC or something, but I can't figure out a mod that does it.

Don't think trans temp. is available through the DIC on the 800 series. You can purchase a Scangauge. Or you would need to add a gauge to the instrument cluster. Also you can swap the entire cluster for one that has the gauge installed.
