Getting A Replacement Key

I have recently locked my only key inside my truck. Does anyone know the cheapest route to get it out? Pop a lock is $85! Can you get a replacement key from the dealership that is cheaper? I have seen somewhere you can get them for $5.00, is this true?

I have a 2006 Silverado Crew Cab.

Easiest and cheapest way is to get a hanger, put it down through the crack in the top of the door and press the unlock button. As soon as you open the door the alarm will sound, so crank the truck up right away to remedy the alarm or stick the ignition key in the door lock and turn the cylinder like you're unlocking the door and this will also cancel it. The GM dealer may be able to cut you a key with the vin and proof of ownership. But, most dealers will not do this nowadays as they're taking a liability to cut someone a key to a vehicle that could be used to steal it. Your truck does not take a transponder key, no matter what anyone else says.

Get a new key cut. While your there let them cut an extra...... Find a spot to attach it to your truck...... upper transmission line on my truck..... stainless steel tie wire...... Its been there since 2001......

 

I did it on a Saturday morning... I had my truck backed down a boat launch I was letting the boat off..... Girlfriend at the time was going to drive out of the launch....... I was fixing to get in the boat I saw her get out.... The door shut and I was screaming to get back in.... And I heard CLUNK... I was white as a ghost. I was around 300 miles from home.... and had 4 keys lock tightly inside my idling truck with the trailer in the boat launch.... And now holding the side of the dock..... repeating calmly 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10, repeat.... repeat..... repeat..... It took me a while to regain composure.

 

Good thing I knew somebody at the dealership back home. He called the owner of a local dealership and dude that worked in parts went down to the dealership and cut me a key and brought it to me..... Whole ordeal took around 3 hours..... Good thing I had a full tank.

I did similar:

Just got a basic key cut ($4.00) that will open the doors but won't start the engine. Tye wrap it somewhere on the beast and then you can always open a door no matter what! Chipped keys (for ignition) run about $60.00 around here! You can tell if they are chipped by a + sign on the shaft.

what i have is a spare key that i keep in my wallet. local lock smith has blanks he can cut that don't have the plastic on the end. i found a old sleeve for one of my CC and put in in it. never know it's there. i go NOWHERE with out my wallet in my back pocket..

just smash the window that way you get a nice breeze for around town. No longer you will have the problem of undoing your window when its hot out. haha

 

I got like 4 keys for my truck. The two that I got when I bought it then I lost the one around the house and so I came to get it cut, they cut 2 for the price of one. So needless to say I got 4 of them.

??? 20 bucks??...is this a dealer in the alley behind k-mart? that sounds too cheap to be true....a coded key?

got it last week the key has a + on it and they had to program it by putting my old key in and turn it to acc and put the new key in and turn it to acc then take it out and put the old key in and start the truck then the same with the new key and it was done

When I picked mine up, I got 2 extra coded keys made....48 bucks......@ the dealer

Onstar.. oh wait.. 2006 didn't have OnStar..

 

Well.. looks like you'll just have to smash the window out with a head butt.

      2026 6.6 L5P oil cooler leaking oil at 4,000 miles

      New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?

      Seems to be Missing a lot of Updates

      So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.

      Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.

      That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
