How Do You Guys Like Your '10 And '11 2500hds?

How do you guys like your 2500HDs? I thinking of trading my truck (see left&below) for a 3/4 ton. I have ended up doing a lot more hauling than I thought I would and really like the idea of the heavier transmission, frame, brakes and the 6.0 motor that doesnt have the AFM. While I've enjoyed getting 19mpg on the highway, I would trade it for not having to worry about the oil consumption and lifter issues (nothing major yet, just a slight lifter noise). By the way, what sort of unloaded highway mileage are you guys getting? I would hope with that 6-spd transmission it would be a little better than my dad's '02 2500.

The 2010 is pretty much the same as the 2008 I own so let me say that it's been a great truck with no engine or tranny issues at all, just power door locks and climate control issues being addressed under warranty. Highway I can get between 17-21 MPG (21 comes at 55-60 MPH, 17, at 75+ MPH) If you can still find a 2010 that would be the way to go if you want to avoid that Diesel Fluid crap that GM now has to put in for the 2011+ model trucks, along with Ford and Ram.

Deisel Fluid crap.... Looking at getting the gasser.

 

Any idea what people are getting in the 6.0L gas? The 6L90 with it's 2 gears in OD, it must do pretty well.

I believe my truck computer says I am getting 17.8?? The truck has 2400KM on it right now. My 08 was getting better. Oh, that's km/100L, I think.

2010 2500HD CC 6.0 3.73 4X4 after 7K miles I am getting 15 to 16 on the highway unloaded. I get 9 to 9.5 pulling 6500 lb travel trailer at 65 mph. I had a similiar 2009 extended cab and had similiar mpg performance. It is capable of getting much worse mpg depending on how heavy your right foot is.

I have an 09 2500HD 6.0 gas. I've had my truck a little over a year now, no issues whatsoever and I am very glad I went with a 3/4 ton silverado. I just can't stand how light duty the 1/2 tons have gotten and how piss poor the ground clearance has become. The 3/4 ton platform inspires lots of confidence and safety when heavy hauling and towing, just can't compare with a 1/2 ton truck. Yea, some guys brag how much their 1/2 ton has hauled, but they never seem to speak about how well their 1/2 ton stopped that big load, and how the truck reacted in higher winds. Just because a vehicle and can a trailer moving doesn't mean it has the capabiltiy to properly stop or control that much weight.

 

My honest hand calcualted mileage in mixed driving is consistently 11-12mpg unloaded, and the highest I've ever seen has been about 15.8 mpg. Loaded down you can easily dip into the single digits (I've have seen between 8-9 during heavy hauling). This is 100% stock with 3.73 gears and I am not a leadfoot either. Personally I don't care what the mpg is, I didn't buy a 364cid V8 in a 6,000 lbs truck to get good gas mileage.

 

If your in the market for a truck with more capability, you can't go wrong with an HD silverado.

What are they doing differently in the 2011 Diesel? I am planning on selling my F150 to get a 2500 Diesel but need to do some homework first.

Starting with the 2011 2500, all diesels require a special fluid that cut emissions. This fluid is in a separate tank and usually lasts for 10k miles. You will get a warning when you get low and if you don't refill your truck will run in "reduced power mode". I don't agree with the required fluid but every truck manufactures are doing it to meet the EPA standards. The 2011 diesels interestingly are more powerful and have more torque. I think this is just to make them easier to sell.

 

Interestingly enough, no one either knows or will say what maintenance the system will require.

Getting back to the original question - in my 2007.5 GMC 2500 HD with the 6.0 I was getting about 14.5 mpg on the highway doing between 70-80 mph. What's weird is as soon as the truck hit 40,000 miles my highway mpg went up 1-1.5 mpg, I didn't do anything different, my driving style stayed the same, my usual route to work didn't change, I don't know what happened, but it was good. But I must say that at 11,000 miles I did get a custom tune for it and that made a world of difference.

I was looking @ some '11 HDs this week & they've partially improved grease jobs.

 

W/ the steering knuckle redesign, you can actually see the grease fitting for the upper ball joint inboard of the tire. The fitting on the lower ball joint still looked like a PITA.

That "special fluid" is urea, a major component of urine. Just piss in the tank, and you will be fine. :thumbs:

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com. 
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver. 
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....  
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps. 
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
