Mud Guard Drill Holes

Recommended Posts

I bought the Husky Liner mud guards. I like the look of them and they seem to do a good job. I live down a quart mile of dirt road and they seem to keep the stones from flying up and hitting the doors................. The included protective film was also nice.

The only downside is that they do require drilling. I installed them myself and the directions didn't say anything about putting anything in the freshly drilled hole to prevent rust. Based on how it felt when I drilled it I am thinking it is a metal that doesn't rust. Is this true or should I take them back off and put something on the drill holes? If so what?

BTW I have a 2010 Silverado LT

Thanks for your help,

Jon

Sorry........I live in MI so rust is an issue.

Would you put the sealant on after they are installed over the screws or should I take them off and seal the holes directly?

Is there a sealer that you recommend?

I'm sure most people use some rtv sealant or like. But you can coat the screw in it, screw it in, then seal the back of it where it comes through the metal. This will give you assurance it won't rust.

Here's my process:

Hold mud flap up to truck and mark hole locations with sharpie.

Drill proper sized pilot holes.

Put a solid ring of RTV around each hole, about the size of a nickel so that you can't see the hole anymore (but it should be in the center).

Put mud flap on and screw in. The RTV will create a great seal and get sucked into the threads as well.

Put a dab of RTV on the back side of the screws.
