08 Duramax Has Water In The Tank Help!

I have an 08 Duramax I used to pull horse trailers. About a year ago I had an extra tank added to it. About 2 months after pulling a trailer I lost power and could only go about 40 mphs. Needless to say the dealership said it was water in the fuel filter.

 

Had it fixed thought I was done with the problem and last week it happened it again.

Also, this has been somewhat of a lemon. We bought it new and after about 10 trips into the dealership for various problems the engine was replaced.

 

I dont know if it is somehow the extra tank is letting water in or its something with the truck. Both times I was not using the extra tank when it happened.

 

Has anyone heard of something like this before? Im really frustrated and am afraid to go anywhere with this truck, both times I was headed on a multiple day trip when it happened.

Had the same thing happen on my 06. Water in fuel sensor on the filter. I want to say it was about $85 and not covered under warranty. The symptoms I was getting are exactly what you described and they stemmed from a shot of watered down fuel. In fact there were 4 other Dmaxes in the shop for the exact same reason.

I would experience an extreme loss of power upon mild to heavy acceleration, and when under a load, like pulling a trailer. Question, have you ever seen diesel fuel on your frame/the ground directly beneathy your filter? This is a common symptom. It immedeately dumps rail pressure when this drain opens, this is the reason they fall on their faces. Hope this helps. I would put another inline filter/moisture separator on your aux tank. Sounds like your getting some condensation going on.

Thanks for the response, the dealership is opening it up today I will ask them about fuel on the frame, I can't remember if there was when it happened the first time. I will definitly add another filter on my aux tank and hope that solves the problem. Thanks again. thumb.gif

Hope it works out for ya. So far no problems at all on my 08. Still on the original fuel filter at 21,000 miles and the fuel filter life monitor just hit zero so I'll be stopping by NAPA this Saturday to get and change out the filter.
