Replacing Cv Axle Shaft Gmt800

So my CV joint is gone on the driver side of my truck and i was wondering is it a job that i can do myself. I am by no means a mechanic and would like some tips or pointers on how todo this. Thanks

Its not that bad couple hours for your first cv shaft should be planned........ you will need a socket big enough to remove the large nut from the wheel side and you might want to find out how much torque the bolts have to be set to.

 

But if you are uncomfortable don't do it and take it somewhere.

Not a bad idea to pick up a service manual. It'll come in handy for other procedures too.

If you have basic mechanical skills, no problem. As others have said, you will need a socket for the large nut on the end. Also, some recommend replacing the nut. Other than that, pretty simple. Pull wheel, remove large nut at outside of axle shaft, remove bolts holding inside of axle shaft, wiggle/work it out. Replace in reverse making sure you torque everything properly. Don't have the values handy but the nut is somewhere north of 140ft-lbs IIRC.
