Steering Wheel Upgrade Problem

Ok I'm hoping some of you mod gurus can help me out here. First I'll start off saying I'm attempting to do the steering wheel upgrade with the radio controls but I'm running into a problem and searching through the threads hasn't helped me yet. Now on to the problem. I started with a steering wheel with cruise control and bought an entire new wheel with the cruise and radio controls. I got the wheels swapped out and reconnected everything that I unhooked in the process and my cruise is working fine (at least the power light lights up, I haven't taken it for a drive yet to verify that it actually works). And the air bag is hooked up correctly again the light flashes and then turns off. But my radio controls don't do anything. I've looked inside the wheel and everything appears to be hooked up. Anybody with any ideas why this isn't working?

recheck plug connections?

Posted

Tried double checking all connections (I had an issue with the airbag the first time before I double checked them all). a question for anyone who has done this upgrade already...Is there only 3 connections that have to be plugged back in? 2 for the airbag and then the one into the steering column (next to the airbag into the steering column). both the plug into the cruise and into the radio controls appear to be secure in there spots.

There is only the one connection for the steering wheel controls (the air bag has two as well). On my truck, it was just that simple. And it worked right away. Mind you I have a 2010 truck. Perhaps the older models (assuming you are trying this on the 07 listed in your sig) do not all have the clockspring for the radio controls in place?

Yea the truck that I'm working on here is a 2007 WT model. If anyone can either answer these other questions that come to mind or correct me if I'm wrong.....

Is there a different clock spring for the radio controls + cruise or is it the same? I thought it was all the same spring

Is there something with my radio that may not let it recoginize the controls? it's a single disc stock radio

Is it a possibility that the controls on my steering wheel may be defective? Is there anyone in the VA or MD or DC area that has working steering wheel controls that would be willing to meet up to swap steering wheels just for testing sake to see if they work or don't work...and if yours work or don't work on my truck

I doubt the wheel is defective, I bet the clockspring is incorrect, or a harness between the wheel and radio needs added maybe a BCM update :D

Just did the same upgrade, same problem. 07 GMC Sierra w/t. I have Onstar, but not xm. that may be the issue. We may need to upgrade our radios.

I also pulled the panel for the DIC upgrade, but I do not have the wiring harness. Correction, now that I know what to look for I do have the DIC cable.

Bump...anyone have any ideas?

you could look at the clockspring socket for how many pins are there(10 pins) and check the plug to see if the same amount of connections exsist on the harness plug

the harness already has the correct wiring the clockspring needs to have 10 pins

Yup I have the same radio as you the one without xm. Looking at the DIC for down the road the wiring for that is in there

Ok I checked the clockspring and that has 10 pins on the plug. Now can anyone verify the correct number of wires in the harness? It has the 10 holes to plug into the clockspring but appears as it only has 7 wires (3 empty holes) Can anyone veryify that this is correct?

if the harness come with the steering wheel, plugged into the cruise and audio controls i would think you have the correct harness

i did this upgrade without any problem also i switched from a single cd to 6 cd then the audio buttons. same clockspring original to my truck

Ok I'm still having no luck and after talking to a dealer I'm leaning toward one of 2 problems......1st is anyone running the steering wheel controls on a single cd non xm radio? I'm wondering if the radio itself is not compatable.....

2nd has anyone done this swap on an 07 WT? is the wiring there in the steering column. again I do have the cruise already

Anyone else have any ideas on this? I'm thinking about giving up on this for a while at least until I can save up some cash to put a nav system in and see if it will work then...as for now I'm frustrated at what should have been a very simple mod and about to give up on it

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
