Front Diff Fluid Level

Recommended Posts

I was reading the front diff fluid change in the tech wiki - I cannot use an allen wrench to measure the fluid depth at cold temp because of the metal casting of the diff case. it is almost level with the fill hole so there is no way to measure fluid depth at that location.

So, I wanted to make sure I can still do the hot operating temp method and open up the fill plug whole at operating temp and let it run out til level that way.

I have 2006 silvy, so anyone with a better way for me to know the proper fluid level would be greatly appreciated.

Check your owners manual to make sure nothing has changed. I doubt it but it doesn't hurt. If it is the same then you should be able to check it when it is hot by taking out the fill plug and let it drain out till it is level with the fill hole.

I don't understand how the case is not letting you use an allen wrench to check the level. Is it that you are unable to insert the allen wrench into the fill port?

Here is how we do it on our GMT 800 Denalis. In the tutorial it tells you how to make a dipstick out of a zip tie.

Seriously, the casting of the diff shell is in the way. You can put your finger in the fill hole and touch the case right below the hole. It isn't even 1/2" below the bottom of the fill hole, maybe not even 1/4". This is why I can't use an allen wrench or bent wire. Whatever I put in there hits the metal of the case and you can't measure the fluid.
