98' Overheating Issue...

Hi, First post ever.

 

I have a 1998 Silverado 1500 that has been experiencing some overheating problems. For the past five or so months I've been tinkering with the truck..and still have yet to find a solution.

 

I replaced the radiator, thermostat, and can't find a leak..but the coolant is disapearing. I ve also checked the sparkpulgs and everything seem to be fine. After a 20 min night drive I lose about 1/2 a gallon of coolant. Other than this the truck runs fine...good idle.

 

Any sugestions...

Have you checked the waterpump and hoses?

yup.... when a head gasket is leaking your coolant can leak into the exhaust ... OR it can leak into your cylinders and contaminate your oil.

 

likely you have an exhaust to coolant head gasket leak ... after a few minutes of driving your exhaust will begin to leak into your coolant and quickly overheat the cooling system ...

 

the BIG RISK of course is that you might leak coolant into your oil ... is your oil brown and white streaked like a milkshake ? ... if any indication of this then DO NOT start the engine .. driving with contaminated oil like this will toast your bearings and crankshaft VERY quickly .....

 

.. or if your head gasket is OK then you might be losing coolant through a leaky intake manifold gasket ... if this is the case then the coolant will end up sitting/collecting on the top of your engine and will evaporate as your drive ... you will also likely be able to smell coolant when your engine is warm and you are standing beside the truck.

I dont think a blown head gasket is my problem. My oil is fine and i have absolutly no smell or smoke from the exhaust...I dont know what else to look at...

Pressurize your system to look for leaks. you can add an appropriate dye to the coolant to aid in finding leaks with a black light.

 

You've basically told us everything that could cause a leak is "fine". This can't be the case if you lose 1/2 gallon in 20 minutes. You're either spewing it out or your burning it. Everything is in play until you find the actual leak.

 

You can test coolant for traces of combustion matter.

this is how i have diagnosed more then one blown head gasket

when engine is cold, remove radiator cap, start engine, watch coolant for bubbles

pull your spark plug and smell it... if it smells like coolant, that's a head gasket. or have someone drive behind you and see if there's an anti-freeze smell.

 

if you're using anti-freeze, and it's not leaking on the ground, the only place it could be going is into the crank case or out the tail pipe. still sounds like a head gasket.

When I had my 98 Sierra, I had an issue with a coolant leak not too long after I got it. Took it to the dealer and they checked it over and found a "heater hose quick-connect" that was corroded and leaking. If I remember correctly, the leak was caused by a galvanic reaction between the 2 different metal components. Check the following 2 links for more information on it

I know I'm late to this discussion, but have you checked the quick connect on the heater hose connecting to the intake manifold? That is NOTORIOUS for leaking and also snapping off in the intake manifold if you try to remove it. Mine was leaking and, as bad as it sounds, is glued to prevent any further leakage, which has worked well so far. I have the new part, I just really don't want to spend a week trying to extract a broken quick connect from the intake manifold and bore a new hole.

Mine never overheated but went through lots of coolant and it was the intake gaskets. My oil allways looked good but would lose about a gallon every two months. Lots of these Vortex 96-98 had this issue.

Luis, I'm having the exact same problem with my 98 Silverado...losing coolant somewhere but the truck starts fine and runs as well as it ever has. Definitely no direct evidence of a leak anywhere but the coolant has to be going somewhere. I am going to try some of the recommendations that people have mentioned in this forum. Will keep you posted if I find it.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
