smrio Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Recently had issues with the ignition not turning the starter. I would turn the Key ignition switch to crank the engine, but nothing was happening at the starter. Today I dismounted the starter, opened it up, cleaned and re-greased the gear assembly inside of it. After cleaning the starter I put it back together and had it tested at AutoZone, the results were: Voltage, Solenoid, Chatter-Passed. Except Current & Drive Extension Failed Showing the Current flow was flow at 4.62, it should be between 20 and 120. So just for fun I re-mounted the starter and cranked the key then the engine starts right up. Weird. Do i only have a certain amount of time before this starter dies out? What's really going on here? During the past couple of months I tried to start the vehicle and nothing happens, this has been going on in recent months.
smrio Posted November 3, 2010 Author Posted November 3, 2010 Well, I dropped it off at a rebuild shop here in town and for a very decent price they will diagnose it and further investigate the solenoid attatched to the starter. The counter clerk has the same issue and he is at wits end with his own vehicle. The problem occurs when the vehicle is both cold and hot. I'll see what I find plus more web research.
smrio Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 Ok get this,- ~"GM Starters(listen and remember all of you GM DIYselfers) have a GM bulletin that advises Techs' to lube there (GM) Starter Solenoids Piston and Piston Receiver, with a special grease(you can get from your local dealer)." Don't know if that is true or a that grain of salt. Never had the issue with nissan and those guys used mitsubishi starters. BUT, I'm gonna look into it. ~Other peeps have said, make sure you clean all connections from the alternator, to starter, relay switch from ignition to starter, battery posts. ~Some peeps say its a bad starter relay itself. I also noticed that the small wire that is not a power supply wire is awefully close to engine manifold and that engine gets awefully hot. I'm gonna have to look into that as a preventative measure sometime. Finally, I Took my starter to the rebuild guys and they said the starter solenoid was a bit worn after I ran down some numbers the PEPBOYS fed me on their reciept. That explains the low current being balanced in the solenoid and maybe the hesitant start.....hopefully thats it. Just to drop some detail info....this is a work truck I crank it at least 5 times a day this truck is at 55,000 miles maybe that did it, anyways, I wrapped it up for about $75 not a bad deal. Hope this helps someone out with their gmc issue because I cross my fingers and wish this doesnt turn into a ghost problem on these parts. Cheers

The truck doesn't get used much but I am leaving on vacation the week after next and would want to take care of this before that. So I need a new starter?? Help
