Trans Gasket, Sealer Or Not?

On and '02 SD with a new OEM filter and gasket, do you use any sealer on the gasket? It's been a while since I changed one, we used to use High-Tac spray and stick the gasket to the pan but now I'm being told not to use anything.

I sometimes use a little dab of something just to stick a gasket in place so that it doesn't move on me. But the last few trans pan drops, the gaskets I used had several bolt holes that were small enough to hold the bolt in place after slipping it through the pan hole into the gasket. No movement. All the gasket material comes right off the pan the next time very easily.

Depends on the gasket material. If rubber/neoprene...no sealer as this is reusable. Paper/cork...I typically use adhesive or silicone. Haven't serviced one of these transmissions so not sure what was used. My Impala had a reusable and iirc even had spacer reinforcements built into the bolt holes so no sealer.

sometimes the sealer makes the gasket too slippery and it squeezes out inappropriately. I install all of 'em dry with no problems .

Thanks, I guess I'll go dry. We used so many different things years ago that it just doesn't feel right to use nothing. Some would coat it with trans fluid and I had a friend that used heavy grease on almost ALL the gaskets he replaced, didn't have many problems either. Just a heads up, there are a few new sealers on the Permatex site, a new trans sealer/gasket maker and a new gear oil sealant.
