Highway Noise Level

I just got back from a day full of driving. 200miles of interstate and the rest of the day around town. I noticed right away when I got this new truck that it sounds like there's a hole in the back of the cab. Like I can hear the back tires smack every road seam. I looked behind my back seat (crewcab) and I notice there is just recycled felt board aganst the back of the cab. My 2002 had everything at least covered with carpet. I know there are to fresh air vents between the cab and the box, but that's nothing new.

It was hard to have a conversation @75  .....My 2002 Diesel was much quieter.

BTW I'm running the stock 20" street treads.

Anyone else notice this? Is there something missing from the back of my cab?

Never had a problem with road noise like that, and I have mud tires and pipes. My truck is actually pretty quiet in the cab. I know my brother's 08 crew cab was ridiculously loud with just factory all terrains on. Maybe it's a crew cab thing.

My extended cab sounds the same. Always checking to make sure the windows are all the way up or looking back over my right shoulder to see if the rear passenger window is up. My 06 GMC Sierra, ExtCab, was very quite. There have been a couple of threads about this. Do a search for "cab noise" and read some of the ones that come up.

so did you just live with it or did you stick a pillow back there or something?

The in cab noise is one of my biggest complaints about my 2009 2500HD Truck that I drive for work. I can even use a bluetooth headset because the speakers arent load enough over all the road noise. My 2007 Classic is quieter than my wifes car is, quite nice.

Sorry guys should have searched... I think i've got it.

off to the dealer!

Did you take it in? Any updates?

I must have the rare exception, my 08 crew is very quite but I have a duramax and maybe they put extra insulation in my truck.

I do also have some hearing loss, so I may just not hear the noise that is actually there.

I also have this noise from the passenger rear. 2011 Gmc Crew Cab, I have taken it in and have had all of the TSB's completed at the dealership. Still has the noise.

I have done some research and found that they have changed the rear insulation panel from 3/8 inch rubber coated panel on the 07- 10 models and have changed to a non rubber coatred panel in 2011. This panel is thicker, but lets more noise through. I hvae taken my rear seat out and have "Dynamatted" the whole rear and that made no difference. I have covered the vents and it helped out 100% but blew my ears out when I turned the fan all the way up. DO NOT COVER YOUR VENTS.

The vents appear to be the same vents that the GM truck has udes since 1999. Some modifications, due to "U" bodies,ETC. But for the most part all out our treuck from 1999 til 2011 have the same vents. It must be the rear panel. I have bought one from a junk yard and will replace mine this weekend. Ill post the results.

Oh yeah I'll bet that everybody that has the noise had a grey insulation looking mat behind their rear seat. And all of those that do not have any road noise have a Black or dark grey panel.

Vents from 1999 till 2011 are part #15927977

Rear panel from 2007 til 2009 and some 2010's is 20790482 and I do think that GM have replaced these withthe new panel that is in the 2010 and 2011 part #20983473.

Can anybody do some more research and comfirm this with a GM parts guy etc???

OMFG! I just bought a 2011 silverado crew and I was telling my wife the cab noise is ridiculous compared to my 2006. Sounds like the passenger window is open. My doors don't seem as insulated either. She thinks I'm nuts! Now I know I'm not!!! Thanks! I need to look into this.

Good Luck !!

My dealer has no interest in fixing it...claims it is normal. Just like the brake squeal.

I told him I have owned over 20 vehicles, 1 of which had stock brakes and 40" tires, and none of them ever squealed like this one does. he tried to tell me it's cuz brakes today get hotter. I said I garauntee they don't get as hot as the stock brakes did on my old dodge with 40" super swampers.

Mine too have rrrr...rrrr.rrrrr tire noise, I kinda like it  , I know our door seals are not the best, but its a Truck - Life goes ON :D

After a trip to the dealer & being told that the "noise is normal", decided to take care of it myself.

What I used to cover the vents was a cut in half (length) 6X9 "natural" car wash sponge.

Being porous, this allows air to escape when the doors are closed.

All the road & tire noise is gone.

Now to work on the absolutely awful wind noise.

My truck has a sunroof.

Just wondering if others that have the wind noise do too ???
