Front Diff, Lsd Or Just Open?

Recommended Posts

ive decoded my vin a few times now and cant seem to find anything in the rpo codes regarding the front diff. id like to know if its a limited slip front end or if its just open. is there an rpo code for it that i should look for?

The front diff. is open,You won't find a code for it,The only code you'll find is the gear ratio itself, and if you have the locker in the rear (G80)

GM doesn't make a locking or limited slip front differential for the trucks. There is none available on the market that I'm aware of. "Locking" a front differential on a independent front suspension truck is very hard on CV axles and front suspension/ steering components.

I know that Nissan has a "limited slip front axle", reading in to it more it's no more than the ABS brakes doing some fancy traction control simulating a limited slip. The newer trucks with Stabilitrac and Traction Control MIGHT function in a similar manner, I'm unsure and GM doesn't advertise it as working that way.

The new Dodge Ram Power Wagon has an avaiable "4.56 axle ratio with Tru-Lok front and rear axle." I heard it on an ad on TV and went to the website to verify.

It also claims to have an "electronic front disconnecting stabilizer bar" I'm not quite sure how that would work.

My Jeeps QD-II has an electronic limited slip up front. The front diff provides variable torque to the axles that is automatically controlled (always active) and can/will fully lock the axles under complete traction loss or when the vehicle is placed in 4low.

I don't buy the argument that IFS don't have it because of CV shafts. It comes down to technology and cost. People don't buy full sized trucks with offroading in mind (not in mass quantities anyway).

the bar has buttons in the cab, to allow you to tinker with the off road handling...essentially it allows the axle to bend more for rock climbing and shit

The electronic stabilizer bars are pretty sweet. Its basically a linear actuator that splits the bar in two halves when disengaged. When engaged, the bar acts as a solid unit. Its very simple/reliable / effective.

I bet there's still a patent on it... once that runs out I'm sure they'll be available aftermarket for a lot of 4x4 apps. ..

If someone else doesn't do it, I may start that business

 everyone keeps saying that. I've had the commander since June.

Just decided to eliminate the truck payment while the truck market was booming. If the market takes another hit I'd end up upside down with the loan.... so basically did some risk mitigation to keep my family safer for the time being. Ill have another truck in the near future, once my other vehicles are paid off and I'm not getting killed with daycare.

the power wagon is a completely different animal.

basically the sway bar helps stop a car from rolling too much. by disconnecting it it lets the suspension articulate to its fullest without intervention.

boo to gm though for not developing an LSD for the front.
