2000 Gmc Front Axle Removal

Recommended Posts

I am replacing the pinion shaft bearing on a 2000 GMC Old body style, and need to know how to get the left inner axle out of the front differential. I have the differential out of the truck and the right side off, which lets you see the back side of the diff. carrier. Does the axle shaft have a retainer I need to take out or does it just pop out? Ive tryed pulling on it with no luck. thanks

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel.
  3. Remove the brake calipers.
  4. Remove the differential carrier assembly shield, if equipped.
  5. Reference mark the relationship of the propeller shaft to the front axle pinion yoke.
  6. Remove the propeller shaft.
  7. Tie the propeller shaft to a frame rail or the crossmember.
  8. Measure the torque required in order to rotate the pinion. Record the torque value for reassembly.
  9. Scribe a line on the pinion stem, the pinion nut and the companion flange. Record the number of exposed threads on the pinion stem.
  10. Remove the nut.
  11. Position tool J8614-01 on the flange so that the 4 notches on the tool face the flange.
  12. Remove the flange. Use the special nut and the forcing screw.

NOTE Carefully pry the seal from the bore. Do not distort or scratch the aluminum case.
  13. Remove the oil seal.
  14. Inspect the pinion flange for a smooth oil seal surface. Inspect the pinion flange for worn drive splines. Replace the pinion flange if necessary.
  15. Remove the dust deflector.
  16. Reverse to reassemble
  17. Now I'm off to work, hope this helps and by the way this is the teardown steps for the pinion seal and what you will need. If you have any more questions please ask.
