Onstar App

Does anyone know if they are going to extend this to the later years? I have a 2010 and making this app for just the '11's is pretty weak.

It would be nice if they did. I dont think that there is much difference in the years.

As far as I know, its 2011 only. I heard they will update it to accept earlier, but I am not sure of this.

I downloaded the App and tried it anyway on my 2010, even though it did say it was only good for 2011s and I had called in and was told the same thing by onstar. I still had to try it anyway. NO it didn't work. LOL

I too was told by Onstar customer service that they may extend it back to cover older models at some point. I just do not know of anything that was changed on the trucks from 10 to 11, so I really do not know why it only works for 11's.

i personally doubt they will provide it for previous years, and would be very surprised if they do..

it is a gimmick feature to push new models, making it available for older years would hamper new car sales.. the "official" word from the OnStar Customer Service Collective is that there is no "Official" word on prior year availability..

anything you hear about it otherwise is just Internet rumor.. Call OnStar and ask, even ask for a stupidvisor.. they will tell you there are no known plans for it, i.e. the customer service hive mind has not been informed whether or not it will be made available, or have been instructed to give no "official" answer in regards to it.

The diffrence from '10 to '11 is the generation of OnStar module (VCIM) '10 has GEN8 and '11 has GEN9, and NO an upgrade for older models will not be offered just like when GEN7 came out with turn by turn and GEN8 with Bluetooth. That is not saying people aren't going to try especially as they did to get the Bluetooth but as anyone that upgraded themselves to GEN8 software strings when you connect into the OnStar center will not match and will not be configured, and if your not configured the APP will not work

why is it "weak"? if they didn't introduce new features yearly there wouldn't be a reason to upgrade your vehicle

Yup I thought it was pretty shitty of them to do that to us, make an app only for 2011 models. Now they offer On-Star kit for ANY vehicle (Ford, Chrysler, Honda, ect). Wow... Really... now they are giving away the best part of owning a GM product. It's almost like they want to fail, I just don't get it???

I have the onstar app for my 2011. It pretty much sucks so you guys arent missing much. Its very very slow and has to update everytime you log in which takes a few minutes. The lock/unlock and remote start feature is also very slow. It takes about 2-4 minutes to work after each command is pressed and that's on the wifi in my home. The only thing I can see worth while is the fact if something is in my truck and i'm not home, someone else could come get it and I can unlock it from wherever i'm at, although I never see myself doing this. I think when my trial is up I won't bother renewing onstar.

I saw this program on the android market with my phone and I gotta say, it's funny how bent out of shape some of the owners of older models are and they leave crappy reviews. It's a totally new OnStar system that allows for this and previous owners can't understand it's like everything else. To those of you who don't like this- if you bought a truck with the 4L60 and the next year the 6 speed became available would you get pissed and demand GM adds 2 gears to your truck? How about adding the torso airbags for 2010 (2009?)? Do the older model owners feel cheated there?

added smart start to my python alarm... same damn thing.... i use it once in a while. i mainly got it because i leave my keys in my toolbox at work. but always have my phone. so if im running around and need something out of my truck i dont have to run back to my box to get into my truck. and more or less just the "because i can" part. if you want it, just go that route and quit complaining.... just like others have said if they extend it back which isnt possible apparently then what would drive you to get a new truck

It is a pretty cool app IMHO. It allows me to see how much air is in the tires, oil life, miles on the vehicle and fuel level as well as mpg. The remote lock/unlock and start commands are a little slow. It takes mine about 2 minutes to start the vehicle. This is ok because I work in a huge building and by the time I wind my way through it and out into the parking lot, the car is nice and warm.

As far as being able to work on older vehicles, common sense tells me that any command or telemetry that is able to be read remotely from your vehicle by Onstar should be able to be read and controlled by the owner of the vehicle through whatever means....whether by app or pc software. On pre-2011 models, they could still have lock/unlock, DTCs, TPM, Oil Life etc. Anything that is on your monthly summary report should be available. I think Onstar is missing an opportunity here. They could get a lot more people to renew the subscription with a little effort on their part.

 Really?

Well, I can see why you guys don't like On-Star... apparently you guys have old trucks... with old On-Star technology (2007-2008).

So with that, I feel bad for you guys... hopefully you'll guys get to see the difference and how much better it is.

What other car manufacture gives you turn-by-turn navigation, vehicle diagnostics, anti-thief protection, and much more??? So yea, On-Star is one of the best things for GM.
