Onstar App

What other car manufacture gives you turn-by-turn navigation, vehicle diagnostics, anti-thief protection, and much more??? So yea, On-Star is one of the best things for GM.

Ford Sync does most everything On-Star does.

As long as you have a cell phone with bluetooth enabled. And Ford doesn't have a phone based app. And as corny/geeky as it may sound I see this as a huge advantage toward me buying GM this summer.

I enjoy the OnStar app. It's been nice to start the truck when I'm sitting inside somewhere and know I'll be out there in a little bit, but don't really have the close range to use the normal remote.

A couple months ago I called onstar asking about if they would have support for earlier model vehicles, and the lady told me yes they would however she had no timeline as to when this would happen.

That's great to know.

I see a different side of the story then car sales.

Most people won't buy a new car for a remote start app if they have a 1 yr old car.

Many people do not continue to pay for onstar after initial trial period.

If they allow older cars to use remote start app they will reclaim onstar subscribers.

If older cars could use app it would pull more people to factory remote start from aftermarket.

This will generate income for everyone.

Hi, it is possible to upgrade to the new onstar with the app in an older vehicle. I have a 2007 Suburban that i put a 2011 vcim, 2010 nav radio so i could send from my phone to my in-dash. Turn by Turn worked but in-dash would not work with the older nav unit. I also have the bluetooth and onstar working perfect. Plus with the newer nav radio i can use the ipod via usb right on the screen.

Yup I thought it was pretty shitty of them to do that to us, make an app only for 2011 models. Now they offer On-Star kit for ANY vehicle (Ford, Chrysler, Honda, ect). Wow... Really... now they are giving away the best part of owning a GM product. It's almost like they want to fail, I just don't get it???

OnStar FMV works nothing like the factory installed OnStar. No vehicle diagnostics, etc. All you get is bluetooth and roadside assistance. It won't provide a record of your mileage for insurance discounts either. You can spend a lot less and get the same features.

This. Everything revolves around the Onstar VCP module generation, and Gen8 does not support some necessary things with the app. Without getting too deep into this, I spent some time supporting the backend services last year. I highly doubt they will ever extend it back to '10 models.

The diffrence from '10 to '11 is the generation of OnStar module (VCIM) '10 has GEN8 and '11 has GEN9, and NO an upgrade for older models will not be offered just like when GEN7 came out with turn by turn and GEN8 with Bluetooth. That is not saying people aren't going to try especially as they did to get the Bluetooth but as anyone that upgraded themselves to GEN8 software strings when you connect into the OnStar center will not match and will not be configured, and if your not configured the APP will not work

You get a lot more than just Bluetooth and Roadside Assistance with the FMV mirror. While it can't do the remote functions of embedded OnStar, you get the core safety and connectivity features, like Automatic Crash Response, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Emergency Services, Hands-Free Calling, plus the previously mentioned Bluetooth and Roadside Assistance. It's being offered at a special price for the holidays, too, so you get a lot for a great deal! There's more info on their Facebook page here http://www.facebook.com/onstar?sk=app_113254625414530 I am one of the moderators of the Facebook page so I'd be happy to chat with you further if you have questions.

I really like the App. I can send directions from my Ipod to my truck and next time I get in the truck it downloads the directions and it very handy. The start function does not work for me. I keep getting a error that I can't start the truck since there is a key in the truck. I assume it is the remote starter I get installed. Lock and Unlock work fine.

I like it so much, I'm now a paying Onstar subscriber just so I can continue to use it.

As for the older model year guys getting p.o.'d about not getting it well, I'm p.o.'d that the one option that I really wanted on my

truck is now available for the '12 model year and wasn't last year...........heated and cooled leather seats.

The only thing I can see worth while is the fact if something is in my truck and i'm not home, someone else could come get it and I can unlock it from wherever i'm at, although I never see myself doing this.

I use it almost daily - When I know I'm finishing up in my office (I'm a graduate student in northern Idaho), I use the remote app to start the truck. The truck warms up during my 10 minute walk to the parking lot. I haven't had to scrape windows so far this season :)

I honestly see it as a niche thing though, the long walk during cold months is the only reason I use it (it doesn't take long to cool during the summer when I start it from remote distance). If I didn't have the long walk (so that I coud simply use the remote) I wouldn't miss it a bit.

It is extremely slow too, as one poster above mentioned.
