Finally done

This weekend we finally got done with fall harvest at home.  Always a great feeling when you are pulling out of the row for the last time.  Yields were actually very very good, something that really surprised us since the crops looked so-so all year.  Just wish the price was better so we could make some money at this.  Maybe now I'll be able to rest on the weekends, since mid-September I've been going home Friday morning and putting in 20-24 hours of work before I left late Sunday.  Most of those hours were spent driving this thing, which is on its last legs, it will be replaced by next year to a tune of $85K+.  Here is are two pics of it and one of our wagons during oat harvest in late July.  I took a roll of pictures this fall that I will develop later this week.  I'll post them if any one really cares to see them, they are interesting to me, but I don't know if that can be said for the rest of you.   :P

thats cool I just went home last weekend to help out one of my old costum harvesting bosses I put in about 16 hours just sat. and sun.  I also got to pull a header trailer with the new truck which really impressed me with the power it does have. :P

Agggg, all that red paint is hurting my eyes!  Anybody got some green spray paint?  LOL

Its good to hear that the yields turned out better then expected, but like you mentioned the prices suck.  We had pretty good luck with sunflowers this year, they turned out really good compared to the milo.  Don't know why, but they just seemed to deal with the hail and lack of rain better.  Guy I work for doesn't do much with grain anymore, and it doesn't really bother me.  I like working with alfalfa, so that makes it nice.  Keeps us busy most of the time though.

I'm sure you still got plenty of stuff to do to keep ya busy though, always is....

Shaners, Dad and I shared a few Bud Lights Saturday night to celebrate the end of harvest, although we still had 15 acres left to do, no problem to finish that Sunday though.

Paco, these combines have a transport speed of 18-20mph, plenty fast for a rear wheel steer.  We harvest anywhere from 3-5.5mph, trust me, 5.5 is plenty fast, almost a bit too fast.  No, I won't forget the cows.

Kansas, you say you don't like red?  You like hay?  How about I put the two together for you?  :P

JP you can tell that paco has driven one before can't you  anything with rear steering can become a real head ache at speeds of anykind.  I drove one across a narrow bridge one time with the header still on it, my brother went to stop traffic so I could come across with out meeting anyone, but one butt hole could not wait and started across the bridge as I got to the middle of it, he threw his little rice burner in to reverse and backed back off the bridge of course it might have helped him make up his mind when I lowered the header down to just above the ground.
