900 Bucks To Fix A Factory Mistake.....

Ordered BF Goodrich All Terrains today Got 265/70/17's load range E for $217 each from my dealer. not terrible Pricing. I just couldn't take the DANGEROUS SCARY ride in the snow of the stock Wrangler ST's I know factory tires suck but these Scared me. Why couldn't GM put a competent tire like a Firestone Destination LE or AT on them? Oh wait, I forgot Firestones are Evil

 

The Destination Load Range D were 700 installed, the BFG AT's Load Range E are 900 installed. I have the destinations on my Liberty and have had them on 2 other trucks. I love them (Although in the 16" sizes they are MUCH cheaper than the BFG's) but I really think the BFG's were the better buy this time.

Wrangler ST's are street tires. For an extra $200 you could have had Wrangler AT/S's from the factory which not only would have been Grade 1's but are a better tire than the BFG's. With BFG you're paying for a name.

I have read really mixed reviews on Wrangler tires. Slme like them, most do not.

The Wrangle AT/S tire that came stock on my truck have been great. Not sure about tread life yet, but they look about halfway @ 26k miles. I've never been a Goodyear fan (bad experience years ago), but have been very pleasantly surprised by these. Not sure if they're available w/ LT ratings?

the GY Wranglers are horrible tires, that I can agree... but, if you wanted all terrain on your 4X4 you could have bought the Z71 package that would have included it. I'm not sure why you wanted load range D or E tires on a 1/2 ton truck though?

my truck came on Bridgestone tires, while I don't see snow usually, they do well enough on wet dirt roads

Wrangler ST's are street tires. For an extra $200 you could have had Wrangler AT/S's from the factory which not only would have been Grade 1's but are a better tire than the BFG's. With BFG you're paying for a name.

 

 

No I would have had to get at least an LT to get any other tire. I bought an LS Truck. It just is insane that GM equips a 4x4 truck with a 7200lb. towing capacity with C range street tires.

 

I would have GLADLY paid $200 for Wrangler AT/s's!

I wanted at least Load Range D to be towing my 6000 lb. trailer. I have blown out a tire before it's not fun.... I just think GM should put an all terrain tire of some kind on a 4x4 truck.

trailer weight has little to do with the truck's load range. the truck only gets the tongue weight, properly balanced a 6,000 lb trailer is no more than 600-700lbs of tongue weight.

When a refer to the AT/S being a better tire I'm referring to traction in snow and sand as well as how it performs on ice. Long tread life is a bonus and the BFG's do last longer but they are less stable in inclement weather and being thrown across the center line for a "head-on" or in the ditch when it's -10* is not acceptable. I've had AT/S's, Toyo's, BFG's, General Grabbers, and Uniroyals. For Michigan weather I prefer AT/S's and am thankful GM makes them available from the factory for a nominal fee, $215 in the case of my white lettered tires.

True,This is why GM does not offer anything higher than a load range "C" tire on the 1/2-tons,If you need the load carrying capacity of a load range "D" or "E" tire your overloading the truck,and you need an HD (which come standard with load range "E" tires)

I tow 8000 lbs (1100 lbs toungue weight) on the stock Bridgestones, as a matter of fact I pulled 8000 lbs over 3000 miles on one trip with no issues.

 

Another thing is the Bridgestones have lasted very well, they have 60K on them right now and still have some life and they still ride great.

 

I know that the OP was talking Goodyears but I just wanted to add that not all OEM tires suck, I am actually considering another set when these finally wear out.

 

And yes the load range E tires are WAY overkill for a 1/2 ton and ride horrible, there is absolutely no reason (other than size options) for putting them on a 1/2 ton truck.

 

It is tough to find a decent LR C tire in an 18" rim size that is 33" tall.

Maybe in Canada,but here in the states you cannot order an LS trim level with them,the "LT" load range "C" tires are only available on the WT or LT trim levels.

Just like we cannot get a sunroof or the DL3 mirrors on an LT trim level truck,but you guys up there can! (We now have to get the LTZ trim level)
