'90 K1500 odometer broken, suggestions?

Any ideas why odo is broken but speedo is still working?  How to go about fixing it?

I'm not sure how similar the setups are, but he odometer on my wifes old Beretta quite working a year or so ago (everything else worked fine).  I got a cluster out of another one in a junk yard for about $25.00, took it apart, and put the odometer in my wifes car.  That Berreta had so many miles on it (over 180,000) that I wasn't really concerned with how many miles it showed overall, but I was more concerned with keeping track of when I needed to change the oil.  The one from the junk yard about 55,000 less miles on it, so I rolled it up to approximately where it should be.    

 

BTW, there was a gear/tooth stripped out on the original one.  The one I replaced it with worked fine.
