sahls01gmc Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I have an 01 2500 (NON HD) and it has 200k miles on it now. What maintenence items should I look into to keep everything working like it should? And low cost parts I should look into replacing? Thanks for any advice James
Black02Silverado Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Are you just referring to the transfer case, since that is what is in the title? If so just fluid changes is about all that I'm aware of that you can do to it to keep it running smooth.
sahls01gmc Posted February 10, 2011 Author Posted February 10, 2011 Yeah, I kind of want to tackle 1 "large" item at a time. Someone had posted about some sort of "transfer case maintenence", but i can't search for anything like that. Thanks for the advice. What fluid do you recommend? I've had the urge to plow with this truck, but it won't be til next winter. I just want to make sure I have all my maintenence taken care of. James

James If you do not have the auto tansfer case then it takes ATF fluid. If it does have the auto transfer case, where you have an Auto button for your 4x4 it takes the Auto TracII fluid that you have to get at the GM dealer. Below is what AMSOIL list for your truck. The NVG 236/246 takes the Auto TracII GM part no. 12378508 The others take AMSOIL's ATF fluid. You will need two qts to change out the fluid in the case. There should be a drain and fill plug on it. Transfer Case,NVG 236/246......SLF No AMSOIL Product Recommendation Transfer Case,NVG 149......GLS Torque-Drive Synthetic Transmission Fluid (ATD1G) Synthetic Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATFQT) Transfer Case,NVG 261/263......GLS Torque-Drive Synthetic Transmission Fluid (ATD1G) Synthetic Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATFQT)
sahls01gmc Posted February 10, 2011 Author Posted February 10, 2011 Ha, my Transfer Case is the only one without an Amsoil part #...does that mean it's not that popular, or GM fluid is the best for it? I will have to tackle this when the weather cooperates a lil more, it was -5 this morning....without the wind chill! Thanks for the part numbers! James
