Picked up my truck from the dealer, had an oil change done... $35. Usually they charge $20. but the 2011's need some oil called dexos. First i've heard of it. worst part is Chevrolet send me a $20 first oil change coupon but I didn't bring it since I figured it was going to be $20 anyways lol.

If you read your owners manual the 2011 MY requires Dexos. If you want your vehicle to be covered for the 100000 mi powertrain wwarranty you must use an approved oil.

I am pretty sure that there is a law that a manufacturer cannot void your warranty if you do not use a product they suggest. The way I understand it is they can suggest but not require... Not sure though, I believe this has been discussed.

$35 is real cheap. My wife's BMW costs over $100 at the dealer to get changed. Then again, you only change it once a year.

Hmmm... I have to disagree.

They are NOT saying you have to use their oil. What they are saying is...you must use an oil that meets the Dexos specs as Dexos is a spec, not a brand. There are several oil companies making this spec oil. Choose one of them.

First of all, it may or may not be in your manual about the DEXOS requirement. There are two versions of the manual for the 2011 MY. DEXOS is not a particular brand of motor oil, it is just a set or requirements that oils must meet in order to be acceptable by GM. Here is a thread that covers a lot of information about DEXOS. http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?...14&hl=DEXOS

GM isn't requiring you to put a specific brand of motor oil in your vehicle, just one that meets certain requirements, which is not breaking any law.

34.95 is not bad.. Its how much my dealer charges..

Go buy 6 quarts of oil and a AC delco filter, see how much it costs.. I just bought 6 quarts of Valvoline and a AC Delco filter last week for my wife's trailblazer from O'Reilly, was 29 bucks.. I will gladly give them $35 to change it and dispose of the oil.

$35 is cheap, I traded in my 04 F350 powerstroke for this one. It was about $92 for me do change it myself, 15 qts of Rotella T synthetic $19.50 per gallon and $18 for the filter at Wallmart.

I will be doing the first oil change on my new truck this weekend, yesterday I bought 6qts of Quaker State Ultimate durability synthetic (Dexos approved) and an AC Delco filter for about $27.

Absoutly. saves me crawling under the truck and having to get rid of the oil.

And yes...dexose is a standard, just like API is...and if you don't use it they can void your warranty.

Shell, and Mobil1 are both dexose certified. But it states that if you cannot find dexose certified oil you can substitute API certified oil.

Most API oils are actually up to dexose standards...they just do not have certification yet...some of them wont get it either...Valvoline said they will make they're oil exceed dexose standards, but will not pay the premium to get certified so one company can use they're oil and charge 25% more a jug for it.

dexose is basically low viscosity oil that, with friction modifiers etc protects as well as its high viscosity cousin. Low viscosity means better fuel economy.

I pay 49.95 here for a regular oil change...M1 is 20 bucks more....and if I have to pay more for the dexose anyway, I will splurge and buy M1.
