I'm not a diesel mechanic, but I work in a factory that builds diesel engines for locomotives.  Over the last 14 years we have had between 350 and 750 employees depending on the orders....

Where I work, we dont get too crazy with overhauls.  We only keep trucks for 3 years or the miles reach 550,000.  Then the trucks get bought back by Freightliner to be sold by some division of Freightliner called SelectTrucks.  Having newer trucks under warranty weeds out some work because if an injector goes, it goes back to Freightliner for warranty work.  The company just started buying trucks with Eaton auto-shift trannies.  They are a beeyatch to work on.  That would be cool to work for CAT.  Ive always wanted to work on the bigger tracked machines.

We average about 300,000 miles a year but of course we do run 24/7 360 days.
