Brakes Sticking

I have 8,000 miles on my truck. I drove 700 miles yesterday. I have to drive 600 miles today.

This morning when I started driving I noticed my rear brakes were sticking. Anytime I made a normal stop, when I started again the brakes would need some acceleration to disengage, and they did so with a clunk. I found that if i used the brakes lightly when i came to a stop then there was no sticking when i started again.

I've driven 170 miles today without anymore ckunking, but I'm on the interstate and am not coming to a stop much. It was cold (20F) this morning and wet with snow & rain. I may have an oppotunity to take to a dealer tomorrow, but I need to get to Pennsyvania today.

Any ideas what may be happening?

Do you have rear disc brakes? If you do you might have a caliper not retracting properly. I don't know if it's a "common" problem but have heard a few people talk about the caliper pins not sliding in/out smoothly & causing a drag on the rotor. If you have drums I'm not too sure except to look inside the brakes to see if everything is moving properly. You may have a shoe out of whack or a wheel cylinder getting stuck. Being so new it may be just easier to take to a dealership & let the warranty people handle it.

It must have been the moisture, becuase it only did it in the first half mile of of the 600 miles I drove today.

Thanks,

My fronts did this a few weeks ago one day when I was trying to put it in the garage. I figure they're due for servicing as I have around 32,000 on them. Just waitin for the weather to warm up a little.

Hi Chris,

My 09 CC Silverado with rear drums does the exact same thing. Has about 10K miles now, brakes have squealed when cold since new, but the clunking/dragging thing is relatively new this winter. Always happens on wet mornings. Seems to go away after driving a few miles, but really makes me wonder what the heck is going on. It actually feels like I'm having to give it extra gas to get it rolling when you move it first thing in the morning, and disheartening because I've never had any other vehicle do that, not even a 200K mile vehicle at work that hasn't been properly maintained. Good luck, and please let us know if a dealer finds anything to help you on this.

I have had issues with my rear drums now for 20k miles. I have spent close too $600 to replace everything. First I had brake check tell me it was my fronts they were just warped. So i bought drilled and slotted rotors and new front pads. those warped within a month, paid $80 to get them turned and a few days later it came back. They told me to just send them back, so i did, turned my stock rotors, got new pads again, got new shoes & new drums. It was a dream for a month then came back, 2 weeks ago I went back again and this time around they warranted- new front discs and pads, and the rear shoes and drums to all new AGAIN! Then i paid for a caliper rebuild, all new harware on the front and rear & a brake fluid flush. Problem is slowly startng to come back. Now they are saying its the rears that keep screwing up causing the fronts to work harder than needed and warping along with glazing my pads. Great! Man I love my truck but I have spent too much time and money since 45k on brakes. Its :)

- oh by the way, when i stop lightly (only after the brakes are good and warm, never do it when they are cold) its as if my pads or shoes grab then let off. The truck "bobs" as I call it. Like if you were to hit the brakes, let off then just keep repeating. Everything gets hot, glazes then squeels/squeeks like crazy.

Your brake shoes absorb moisture and expand, causing them to grab excessively. It goes away after driving a little bit. Every vehicle I have ever owned with rear drums has done this.

I test drove a brand new one before ordering my 11 and it had the same issue. It was like a "line lock" on a hot rod. Ya had to wind up the throttle a bit and then suddenly you could feel them break loose with a "thud" noise. You could tell it was the rears by the feel of it.

I'm gonna miss those rear discs on my quadsteer when the new one comes in.

WOW! My truck does the exact same thing!!! Front and rears!! I have almost decided to replace everything, but now??!!! Guess if I do I will start with the rears? I am starting to see the drums on these trucks suck big time!
