'08 "bump" In Drivetrain While Stopped

Recommended Posts

My '08 silverado and my wife's '08 Tahoe are both having the same issue. While in gear but stopped (i.e. at a stop light) you can feel it try to jump forward. It almost feels like someone bumped you from behind. I seem to recall reading something about this.

Is it a known issue ?

There is a service bulletin for this. The driveshaft slip yoke needs lubed.

does it cover 07's too, because mine has been doing this

Its def. a do-it-yourself. About 10 minutes really.

Drop the drive shaft, pack the slip yoke splines with grease and reinstall. If the drive shaft goes on tighter, you did it right :(

The entire shaft has to be dropped? I'm not familiar where the slip yoke is since I haven't been under my truck yet

07-09 1500 4 wheel drive trucks, per bulletin 09-04-21-003D, should not use grease for lubricating the yoke because there is no grease retainer to keep it from entering the transfer case, which the grease is not compatible with the transmission fluid in the case . ATF should be used to lubricate the splines. Also, the bulletin adresses trucks without the autotrac transfer case.

If you crawl underneath you will see the driveshaft with a u-joint connecting it to the rear differential. On the end towards the front of the truck, you will see another u-joint just before the shaft goes to the transmission (2wd) or the transfer case (4wd). From the joint to the transmission or the transfer case, there should be a small amount of the slip yoke showing before it enters either unit. That is the slip yoke. When its dropped out, there splines on the output shaft and on the inside of the yoke.

Newdude,

Is there a similar bulletin for 2010 trucks ? I have what sounds like the exact same problem ..

If your truck is under warranty still I would say take it to the dealer and have them do it. I took mine back to the dealer three because of this issue. First two times they just cleaned and re-lubed the slip yoke, the third time they ordered a new one and I haven't had any issues since.

I didnt't see one for 2010 trucks for that issue, but it is possible that if more of that issue pops up, they could expand it to include 2010, etc.
