Noise In Front End

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I just got a new 2011 Sierra 4X4 with a manual transfer case. This is the third Sierra I have owned but it's the first one with a manual transfer case.

There is a terrible scraping noise in the front end when I drive in four Hi even on a snowy road. I took it back to the dealer and the mechanic told me that it is a normal sound for trucks with a manual transfer case. I'm no mechanic but this definitely does not sound normal to me.

Has anyone heard of a brand new truck normally making a scraping noise in four wheel drive before?

Well, congrats on the new truck... but no.. It shouldn't be doing that. I'm sure a quick trip to the dealership will take care of the issue.

Let me know what you find out... I have a 2010 with the manual transfer case and the first time I put it in 4HI, it was ok. The second and third time, the front end was nosier than I had thought it should be. I previously had a 4wheel drive vehicle so it was a noise I wasn't use to.

There should be no difference between noise levels between auto actuated and manually actuated transfer case once engaged.

Maybe it is the sound of "Made in China" or "Made in Mexico" quality you are hearing? :dunno:

For all the bragging about how GM has improved the quality, this type of stuff should not be happening.

This baby was made in Fort Wayne Texas.

The noise is like a scraping that gets louder as you accelerate.

I thought it strange when the mechanic at the dealership told me that the noise was normal so I went to GM and some lady is looking into the complaint. I can only hope that she does something for me.

Still no luck on the noisy front end.

Does anyone know what is or isn't normal for noise when it comes to manual vs electronic transfer case?

I'm going to be dropping off my truck next week for this same issue. I'll let you know if I find anything out. They will have my truck for an entire day and will be checking on another issue as well.

To anyone who has wondered if this is supposed to be normal.

I just took another 2011 GMC Sierra with a manual transfer case out for a test drive and it sounded just like the one I have. This atrocious noise must be normal on new 4X4 GM trucks with a manual transfer case. If I had known this I would never have bought it. In my opinion, while traveling on a straight road, you should not be able to tell if you are in 4 High just by sound.

This sucks. I am stuck in a brand new truck that makes a terrible "but normal" sound that is bad enough that I won't even use the 4X4! Thanks GM.

I have a '11 Silverado, manual transfer case. I didn't have the noise you are talking about. However, the last time I had it in four wheel drive I did notice such a sound. I just chalked it up to mud or something in my undercarriage. After reading this thread though, I will have to take a close look to see if my sound is still happening. I had about 10,000 miles on it when I heard it. I have 12k now, but I haven't been 4WD lately.

I was told that the noise was normal. In all honesty I'm not even sure that they took it out and drove it since I had it in for another issue. I'm going to try and find some dirt/stone somewhere and put the vehicle in 4hi the "old school" way. Basically stop the vehilce, put it in N, shift down to 4hi on the manual transfer case, put it in D and then see if there is noise. Then try it again "on the fly" and see if there is a difference.

MIne is the auto. No noise in a straight line(in 4hi). But I leave it in auto mode now, I love it.

I can forget if it is wet or whatever just punch it coming out of a corner and no spin. It kicks in silently, traction control hardly ever kicks in. It just switches to 4 and sticks like glue. I love it.

I have an 09 that has a funny sound as well. I took it to my dealer and they said it wasn't normal. They checked all the fluids and the front differential fluid was 'milky'. The service manager said to take it out and try it see if that fixed it, well I went to do some coyote hunting on a mountain and the noise is still present. I am gonna take it back in have them fix it. I know one thing, if it is normal I am also very pissed off about it! The owners are nice and willing to work with customers. I let everyone knows what the fix is if there is a fix.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.

    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
