i have to get this off my chest. Canada is a beautiful place to live i love my country BUT we get ****ing BENT over on to me it seems like everything. fuel, gas, housing, taxes. friggin everything. why is everything so god damn expensive in canada. i just compared my flight that i take home to ontario every two weeks (i commute to alberta) to flights around the same length across the states. its nearly double the price...DOUBLE!!!! they take you to the cleaners because there is no competition i imagine, there is only two airlines. but seriously...over $1000 bucks return to go from thunder bay ONT to fort mcmurray AB lately...thats CRAZY. thats like half way across the country and lately $1000 gets you a milkrun on a friggin Swine flu infested, rickety piece of $h*t plane for a ride home to see my family. right now i feel like smacking a few polititians. theifs. :D

any other canucks in here fly occasionaly and feel the same way???

I travel most weeks for work and you're absolutely right, flights in between Canadian cities or from the US to a Canadian city are absurd. I've never flown Westjet but I hate Air Canada with a passion. It won't be of any help to you but what my employer does to me is have me fly to a US city on the border and drive. That's tough for Alberta as most of the cities are a good bit north, and there isn't much of anything in Montana. :D But I've flown to Seattle to go to Vancouver, Detroit for western Ontario and Buffalo for other parts of ON. It saves hundreds. I have no clue if it's just lack of competition or if there are indeed extra taxes charged though.

In all fairness most of your problem is going to and from fort mac, there is lots of demand and everyone lines up to get their share of the money people who work there earn. I mean I can go from cape breton to vancouver return for about $900 if I book a two or so weeks in advance. The problem is that the government will not allow other airlines to come in and compete because they only want to run certain routes and will run Air Canada out of business and then without Air Canada there would be no real way for a lot of people to travel around the country so in way they are right to do what they do.

Basically you are going to keep paying too much for crap service. Personally I wish they didn't even have attendants on Air Canada anymore because they are so rude/stupid/annoying I hate having to interact with these people. I lived in England the past few years and train travel is so much better, impractical for the size of our country but there it has to be about a 500 mile trip before taking a plan is actually faster considering check in times and such.

I can empathisize with you Chase, however, like Superperv23 said its to keep AC going. You might be better off if you could fly out of a better city. I fly regularly to Europe and China and the fares are not much more than your silly little jaun, for coach at the last minute, say 600-800 for Germany. I always fly AC overseas and have great service, I just wish the flight attendants were younger than my mother! I mostly fly business class and the service on AC is better than their competitors except for maybe Singapor Air. I've flown out of Toronto where the taxes and landing fees were higher than the air fare.

ppffffft look at flights going to from ft mac to thunder bay from west jet right now. then look at how many more air canada has. west jet used to be better, now they just suck too. if i was to get a ticket with them now their prices are 3-400 dollars more round trip almost everytime. cuz they only have 3 flgihts a day that go to t-bay. air canada has like over ten that connect. and usually much much better flights. you guys are right tho, its fort mac. but i mean what the hell, they have you trapped and they know it...what am i supposed to do. drive to friggin edmonton every time on my first day off. pay for 200 bucks for parking for two weeks???????????? you get friggin screwed on flights comin outta fort mac. i hate it. like jesus. when is it just going to get better??? you figure their is enough people that have to fly outta here why would they make it so expensive??

Because there are so many people flying in and out and they are going to keep doing it, you wont see a drop in price until people stop flying out of there, until then price will keep raising with demand till it hits a level people will not pay for anymore.

Its all us people from Newfoundland man....everyone trying to go back home for a visit all the time...and some of us will pay whatever they want to go back home. I'm not one of them personally...I haven't been back to Newfoundland in 7 years now....the wife on the other hand...she would pay 10G either way if I let her. :D:sigh:

Your right though man...we do get railed on pretty much everything.

I pay less then you do to fly back to NB but then again it is a vacation flight for me once a year and I book in advance.

Air Canada is crap but I find them much better than Westjet when it comes to comfort that extra inch or two of space makes a huge difference for my 225lb body

I don't know to much about the topic, but what about frequent flyer points/plans. Don't certain credit card companies offer these?

They do but you would need 25,000 Air Canada points for that trip so if you have a platinum amex you spend over $25,000 on a year you get 1.5 points per dollar so you would be looking at spending $16,667 to get the flight for free plus then you would have to pay about $200 in tax. Not really a viable way to travel haha

That seems really overpriced. I flew to orlando from calgary and back direct for $650 last year on westjet. The service was pretty good. Not a big fan of a 737 though. It just looks and feels like a friggin bus to me.

I do know a few people who when going south, rent a car, drive to great falls, and fly from there and they save a pile of money. Not many direct flights though.
