I recently bought a 2006 Sierra Nevada 4wd 4.8l automatic. The truck is in nearly new condition with only 79000km on it. Yesterday I took it out on a gravel road, engaged the 4wd and just let it idle along. While going straight it seems fine but when I serpentine back and forth across the road I hear a groaning noise from the front of the vehicle when the steering wheel is 'hard over' one way or the other.

 

Can you tell me what that might be?

first off ,welcome to the gm truck groan,

 

second ,do not engage 4wd on hard pack and turn like that ,,snow ,ice and mud only,

 

it is driveline load causing it ,tire diameter etc ,drive 'er

Ahh...Driver abuse...I should have known! OK.

I traded off my old 98 Chev w/t for it. I never had this noise with the old truck under any condition so I thought I should ask. I have 30 days to return this truck to the dealer if I want so I figured I should test the 4wd somehow and that was the only thing I could come up with.
