Pcv Catch Can Installed

Well i finally got my AMW catch can the other day and it stopped raining so i installed it this morning. Install was super easy and the can is top notch quality. Lets see if we can get a pic of all the different installs from the recent group purchase or if you have a catch can period. I know not everyone looks in the group purchase threads so i wanted to start a thread here so everyone could get a peak at what we got. Just used a small piece of aluminum i had layin around and mounted the can to that and then bolted it to the brake reservoir.

Install looks great Dave! Let us know how much oil it collects over time. I plan to check how oil mine collects after I run through a couple tanks of gas, just to guage how fast it fills up. I predict the fill rate will be slightly different for each of us depending on the age and condition of the engine and even driving style could play part as well. For example, if one person drives their engine hard with alot of quick starts and high speeds or purhaps tows often the fill rate may be faster than a person that drives conservatively and never tows with their truck.

I haven't had time to install mine but hopefully this weekend.

 

I really like where yours is mounted. Clean and out of the way of everything else. Would you happen to have a picture of the scrap piece of aluminum that you used?

Is that supposed to trap oil that is in the vaccuum system to prevent it from going back into the intake? A pre-pcv filter? And where is a good place to get one? Thanks

Looks great, thats the exact same mounting system I used a month ago on my 06. Over the course of about 2 weeks, I've caught probably an ounce or ounce and a half of oil. Pretty amazing how well the things work.

 

My mpg has gotten better since the install as well, probably about .5 mpg.

thanks for the replies. Sorry i dont have pic of the aluminum but all i did was cut a small rectagle out of an old screw tray i had layin around. Im sure you could probly go to lowers or home depot and get some aluminum stock for cheap and cut it to your specs. Its not a very big piece maybe 6" long by 3" wide. Very sturdy though but has some give so it wont snap off if you bump it. I just shot some metal primer on it then some black lacquer i had layin around. I might go back some time and make a better looking piece but it works for now.

The catch can is to stop oil vapor from being sucked into the intake. Your pcv draws air from your valve cover into your intake to help keep crankcase pressure at an acceptable level. As the air is sucked out of your crank case and valve covers with it comes alot of moisture and oil vapor. Without this catch can that oil vapor and moisture is sucked into the intake and into the cylinders to be burned. Only problem is alot of that moisture and oil vapor over time accumulates inside your intake manifold and behind your throttle body as well as other places like sensors, etc. The catch can stops this from happening. The oil vapor and moisture condensate inside the can and are stopped from being sucked into your intake manifold. Basically its keeps the inside of your manifold and cylinders cleaner, also many people have reported a decent gain in mpg from this mod which would make sense.

The only thing I can think of is the engine may run more efficiently with this Oil Catch can, since the oil and combustion byproducts that it catches are no longer diluting the air/fuel mixture. Having oil in the air/fuel mixture is really not a good thing unless you're talking about a 2-cycle engine. :uhoh: Granted the amount of oil were talking about is very small amount that adds up over time. I believe this mod is more about preventing deposits both in the intake and intake valves, which should reduce engine wear and emmisions. I really do not expect much of MPG gain with this mod, since my truck is quite new and should not have a lot of piston blow-by. A higher milage truck or one that is driven hard or tows a lot may have more blow-by gases, which would cause more oil to enter the PCV system and they may have a more noticable MPG improvement in therory. I'm still on my first tank of gas, since I added my catch can and I have not really noticed any noticable MPG yet according the DIC.

yeah mines a 2011 to and im not expecting any increase in mpg but it would be cool. Definatly cleans up the fuel/air mixture and just that gives me a better peice of mind.

Just for reference, my 2006 had about 65000 miles on it when I put this mod on. I did see a little mpg increase, but nothing major. I need to clean off the junk that the oil mixture has formed in my intake over the past 4 years, and it might run more efficiently. I use a scangauge and it the monitors throttle position sensor. Before putting the PCV catch can on, at idle in park, i registered 5%. I put the PCV catch can on. Immediately, when I cranked it up, it was running between 3-4%. At just about all speeds, it is 1-2% less open. I have to think the motor is being more efficient due to less fuel/more efficient combustion, but thats just me.

 

I'm not sure if it is coincidental, but I have been getting the best mpg I've ever had in this truck since installing this modification. I never saw above 18 except twice, even with 3.23 gears. Now, I have been getting upper 18s and low 19s with 4.10s!

 

Regardless of the mpg difference, which on a new truck might be nothing, i think filtering all of the junk out of that vapor is definitely a good thing to do for the efficiency and cleanliness of your motor.

Is this the tube that you attach the catch can to?

 

The yellow lines are where I plan on cutting. Is that were you guys have cut yours? If you could post a picture of you install without the engine cover so I can see where you attached the hoses and where you cut it was be much appreciated.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
