What Is My Gear Ratio?

I hear alot of talk of what kind of gears people have, and I was wondering if someone could help me out with mine, I could not find it on google, well probably did but I got different results.

 

2006 GMC Sierra SLE

1500 2wd. ext.cab

5.3L V8

 

I hope this helps, if not what is the easiest way to determine what kind of gears I have.

a quick SEARCH of the site turned up:

 

"Look in the glove box for the RPO codes, look for GU6 = 3.42, GT4 = 3.73, or GT5 = 4.10"

will do man, if not there it should be listed on the manual as well now that I think about it. I hear everybody asking what kind of gears they have for what tires and such, figure I could do some research for the 285's im putting on.

probably won't be in the manual, since its the same manual in every model of truck. You should have a decal inside the glove box with a whole list of codes.

^^ what he said. it won't be in the manual. check the sticker in the glove box. The above mentioned codes are correct, as well as GU4 = 3:08 and GU5 = 3:23.

 

You could also block the front tires, put a jack under the rear axle, put the transmission in neutral, rotate the rear wheel one full rotation, and count how many times the rear drive-shaft turns. If it turns 3 times, you have 3:08's. If it turns 3.25 turns, you have 3:23's. If it turns just shy of 3.5 times, then you have 3:42's. If it turns just shy of 4 times, you have 3:73's. If it turns just over 4 times, you have 4:10's, you get the idea.
