285 tires

I am getting new tires or at least I have too now.  Original Firestones have 50,000 on them, with very little tread left.  One is also going flat now.  Anyway, trying to decide on size.  I am getting the BFG  Allterriains for sure.  I jsut can't decide if I should go with the 285s.  I am going to keep the stock alum rims.  And i will probably let the Sped., abs, go with out adjusting for it.

Do these fit OK?  Will I have to crank the bars any?  Also looking for pics of any fits like this.  Im new here and would appreciate any response.  Thanks

I believe you will have to trim a little plastic off of the left front inner fender liner where it covers the washer reservoir. Turn your wheels a little to the right and look at how close the current tire is to it. The BFGs are big and square shouldered, so they will be a lot closer than your current 265s. Also the factory wheels are only 7" wide and might seem a little narrow for the 285s tread. This can result in the centers wearing more than the edges...

OK... thats my 2 cents worth. How about the rest of you???

Here is a link to a Silverado with 285s, 16x10 Centerlines, and Rancho 6" Suspension lift. This what you REALLY NEED!

They should fit-you may have to give the torsion bar bolts a few turns depending on the factory settings.  Don't know about trimming the liner-I've heard mixed comments about that.

Good choice in tires! :thumb:  I had a set of 265 BFG ATs on my Silverado and they were a great improvement over the stock tires.  You'll get a higher load  rating, better cornering and better traction.  I have a set of 285s on my F250 and they are noticeably larger than the 265s.

Not sure I recommend cutting the liner but I had to trim about an inch off of mine to get it to stop rubbing when I backed out of my driveway... It didn't cause any noticeable difference in appearance or function.  I agree that the BFG AT is the king of tires. My current set has 50,000 miles plus on them and still have great tread depth.

I put 285s on my stock wheels with no torsion bar crank and they fit perfectly without any rubbing.  I cranked my bars a little after though just to level the truck out.  You should have no problems whatsoever with 285s, I know a TON of people who have gone to that size on the trucks, and no one has had any issues... :thumb:

I upgraded my tires with BFG AT's about 18 months ago.  I put 295/75/16 on the stock 7" aluminum GM rims.  NO Problems what so ever with rubbing or grinding!!! I eventually raised the front end some by cranking the torsion bars, but that was mostly for the look of the truck rather than functionality. I chose that size because I had always planned on lifting my truck and also upgrading the wheels to a 16x10 rim size.  You may not want or need such a large tire, but have no fear about the 285's.  Should be very happy with the BFGs, they kick a$$

I also have 285's on my 2000 indigo chevy. I went with American Racing 16x8 python rims though and I still had no rubbing at all. I cranked the torsion bars but it wasn't because of any rubbing, I just liked the look of the truck sitting more level. check out my link in the sig to see some pictures.

What about adjusting the speedo or ABS or anything like that. I am getting BFG 265 MT's, but if I could step up to the 285's without any adjustment I will. I plan to get a 3" body lift in the future, but that's at least a year or two away. I need my tires first.

I just want to know if any other adjustments are necessary or if I can just put the tires on?

id have to say you could get by with no reprgramming with the 285s.  Your speedo will be off so you will have to be aware of that.  Also your odometer will be off slightly

If you can live with that go with the bigger tires

I went on Friday to get the tires......

Went with the 285s...They are very cool!  I like the look of the truck alot.  They fit on there with no problems.  They put one front tire on and let me look at for fit.  It was close so I had them tighten the torsion bars a little just to level the truck off.  I looks very nice now!  Very happy I went for the larger size.

Glad to hear you are happy with the new tread.  I had a '99 that I put 285's on as well.  Really helped the appearance and not to mention the traction of the truck.  I didn't adjust the suspension or do any trimming with mine as well.  Have fun!

What about us 2wd drive guys? Will we have problems fitting 285's without a lift?

I believe you cannot fit 285s without lifting on 2wd.  The 2wd sit a couple of inches lower then the 4x4, so I don't see how it could work...
