Voltage Regulator?

The other day on a short trip the red "battery" light on my dash came on, and the DIC showed a message like "Service Battery Charging System". Dash voltage guage showed about 15V (above the 14V mark, about halfway to the next un-labeled mark).

 

After the trip, parked the truck, took care of some other stuff, and an hour later restarted the truck. The red indicator is no longer lighted and the DIC message is gone.

 

Since then I've noticed that the voltage meter (which usually seemed to be "painted in place" at 14V) now varies and doesn't seem to be as "steady" as I'm used to seeing.

 

Bad voltage regulator? Can I replace that without a complete new alternator?
