81 K10 Rebuild Project

hey guys, been a while since I posted anything. Just in the midst of my rebuild project on the old chev. all drivetrain, suspention ( 6" leafs with 1" blocks I made for a custom lift), axles, brakes and interior being redone. 2 months and over 100 hours logged so far. And the new turn key 355 stroker arrives today! :dunno:

question is. Im driving the truck with open headers down to the exhaust shop (I aint no exhaust fabricator) to get it piped, have a couple super 44's im going to use. Just not sure which way to get it done. was thinking of going straight back and then just dump the muffs over the rear axle... or maybe go all the way out the rear? or what about some side exits just before the rear wheels?

 

any advice on what would be my best route would be awesome. thanks guys

well since its 81 you dont have to go threw inspection no more so you wont need cats or tail pipes i say dump it before the axle it will have a very deep rumble where the rear bumper exits will have a tight crispy sound.I have my cherry bomb extreme dumped,you cant stand next to the passenger door because you can feel the deep rumble in crest.Im getting SS pipes welded up Tomorrow.

Painted the axle too? That looks like a nice truck sir. I've had a couple 73-87 pickups in my day. I did my C10 straight back. Did some long tube headers, to 2.5" true duals with Cherry Bomb glasspacks at the front of the bed. Doesn't sound like a drag car cause it's kind of quiet, but I like it.

 

I did my '06 before the tires, and it sounds absolutely mean!! That's what I'd tell you to do.

Right on thanks alot guys. Hoping to get it all back togeather this weekend. Just bolting up the flywheel and clutch right now. cant decide to go with the pilot bushing or the bearing, i have both. I hear the bushing is the better choice since it cant blow up and chew up everything, think i might choose that one. As far as the exhaust goes, Im torn between dumping them and side exits.

 

Lets see some of your guys work, always love to see new ideas.

Awsome truck, I love to see the older Chvey's restored and tricked out. Here in NW PA there aren't many left, the salt eats the crap out of them. You have alot skill and that motor looks great. :(

Yea the truck was partially restored back in '98.. shop did the body work and paint so thats still in decent shape for now. as far as the mechanics go, im sure it wasnt done professionally as it was just a real crap thrown togeather job.

 

I'll post a vid soon of the break in when its all back togeather.

project update. engine in as well as trans and t case, all wiring and components installed except headers! my effin longtubes wouldent clear even though i have a mini starter motor on it, and block huggers hit my motor mount on the left side ofcourse. just waiting for some standard length ceramic coated hookers.

your trucks looking good! It took my a while to build mine but its been done for 10 years now. Nice to see people rebuilding these 73-87 trucks!!!

thanks man. did you have problems at all clearing your passenger side exhaust header? pretty sure they offset the engine to clear the steering shaft, plenty of room on drivers side. long tubes hit the frame and leaf shackle before it was even snugged up. the set of hookers i have are both bolted in now but i have like 2 mils between the pipe and frame and its sitting an inch or two away from the shackle now, so thats an improvement, but still too close to the frame.

 

anyone ever have this issue? can I just cut a small recess in the frame around the one tube that hits? or is that a big no. ill take some pictures today

Built a bunch of those trucks, even with big blocks, and never had header clearance issues. I usually used Flowtech headers but I'm not sure if they are even in business anymore. If I remember right, Dynomax's seemed to fit o.k. too.

 

On the frame notching thing, I wouldn't, if it were me. Those frames were plenty weak as they were so I wouldn't want to add to that.

yeah its weird i am using flowtechs. dont understand whats going on. heres a link to an article about the exact same issue im having. maybe i should try dynomax?

    • I thought I was building a HD 3500 srw, maybe I was lost.
    • No doubt, I definitely agree with you. However, considering the 6.2 and 3.0 have been catastrophically failing with very little miles, I figured I would put trouble free. I’m at 18,4xx and still not a single issue.  
    • It’s never dry here but it gets hot. My 4 vehicles I keep at home drive an 18 mile loop. One 6 days a week. Two about 3 days each and one once a month. Only one goes on trips about 4 times a year 1000 to 2000 miles each time. One 26 years old gets driven once a month for 22 years. One 14 years old goes 6 days a week. The other two are recent at 2 and 4 years. All are performing normal no extra service other than that would be half of recommended or severe service in the maintenance manual. No extra water or steam out the exhaust or premature plug wear. I would consider an 18 mile loop would be enough. So apparently once a month at 18 miles for 22 years has kept the collector car running well. About 45 minutes a month. 
    • It is working as designed.  NHT and non NHT trucks have the same exact transmission cooling setup.  NHT just gets a larger radiator.     The transmission cooler loop on these is as follows.     -Transmission out goes into an oil to water heat exchanger (item #1 in the first illustration below).  This exchanger has engine coolant opposite the transmission fluid and uses engine coolant to warm and then regulate the transmission fluid temperature when its in the operating window.   - From the cooler it goes to a thermal bypass valve (item #11 in the 2nd illustration below).  If the ATF has not reached the temp to open the bypass (194F), it loops back.   - When it reaches 194F, the thermostat opens and ATF then flows out to the oil to air auxiliary cooler (item #17 in the 2nd illustration) at the front of the truck.  From there it goes back to the transmission.     Your only fix would be to swap for the PPE thermal bypass delete block which will open the loop to the aux cooler all the time.  It will STILL run warm, probably 170-200F, but that's as low as you'll get it as its still flowing through the oil to water exchanger.      
    • Most say the oil temperature needs to above the boiling point of water to rid it of moisture and long enough to dry it. Many think that is about a hour at 212 F or more. Those people have never line dried cloths in a Midwest winter. Leave a pan of water sitting on the counter and eventually it all evaporates. So heat drives the time it takes. Water in oil under 175 F, the Nitration initiation temperature, is a minimum then for temperature and samples I've done that use Karl Fisher method say about a hour (in a healthy well tuned motor) over 175 F will dry it to under 800 ppm. Low enough to not be much of a factor. Motors with weak rings will take longer and the colder the air temperature the longer it takes.   On a cold motor there is also the condensation temperature. Blowby gases that contain moisture are subject to that cold cylinder wall, like sweat on a glass of ice tea. But also subject to the Law of Partial Pressures. Wear studies by GM and the DOD  indicate wear is a real issue below 85 F and a concern to 140 F but doesn't become a minimal factor until about 160 F. You know this intuitively when you see water vapor exit the exhaust pipe until the system gets above the dew point. It isn't magic, it's physics and it fascinates me. I know you didn't ask but....I over share sometimes. 😉    You keep the Camaro's high and tight.
