2000 Sierra Trailer Wiring Diagram

I added the factory hitch and 7-wire connector but have a question regarding electric surge brakes. My buddy has a Ranger Z520 Bass Boat and he has the electric surge brakes on the trailer. When we connected the trailer wires to my 7-5 adapter, the trailer brakes would not disengage (nor would the turn signals work). I don't have a problem when towing a boat trailer (or any trailer for that matter) except those with those dang electric surge brakes.

NOW TO MY QUESTION...

Does anyone have the factory wiring diagram complete with wire colors for the factory 7-wire connector? From what I have read, it seems that GM used a blue wire as an auxillary/electric brake connection. I want to make sure I have all the wires connected correctly and possibly replace the factory 7-blade receptacle if it's bad. A friend of mine said there was a lot or corrosion on my factory receptacle so I might not be getting a good connection. I'm not sure that's it because all the lights work when I tow a different boat trailer (other than Ranger) or even tow a car hauler (standard 4-wire).

Thanks folks...

Sorry for posting this is the wrong place (I didn't read far enough down to notice a trailer/wiring area). I moved this over to the Trailer, Hitches, and Towing area.

Yep - blue is brake .... and if it's locked up, that means it's getting a full 12V on the blue wire. Those brakes will not work properly without a brake controller like this one: Brake controller

Thanks for the info. I have read several posts that illustrate someone installing this on a GMT900 series truck but I haven't read anywhere that shows installing this on a GMT800. Do instructions come with this controller that show you how to do it?

Thanks again

Yes - mine came with a mini DVD. I have the Tekonsha P3. I can't remember if the '00 had the wiring in place or not. The 900's do.

Here's a vid I found for an '00 Silverado: video

Thanks. I e-mailed etrailer.com and got a quick response back regarding my 2000 GMT800. The tech said in order to pull a trailer with surge brakes all I need to do is tap into my backup lights and ensure my 7-wire connector is connected to the backup lights in the center position. I went out and verified that everything works to my 7-wire connector (even my backup lights get power to the center pin in the 7-wire factory connector). I really believe something was wrong with my other buddy's Ranger trailer because someone else had the same problem trying to tow it. I am heading over to another bud's house to try his Ranger Z520 trailer to see if it works. If it does, then I know that other trailer has issues. Thanks again for the help Jsdirt! I appreciate it! I'll post on here whether or not it works. We have a big tournament in the morning so I want to make sure everything is good to go before we head out.

Good deal. Yeah sounds like there's an issue with that trailer. Happens quite a bit.

I'm headin' out myself before sunrise tomorrow with a buddy of mine. Hitting a local lake - it's just before the spawn around here. Should be fun.

Good luck in the tournament! :banghead:

Well I went and checked the connection at my 7-wire connector and I had power to everything (even the backup lights). We hooked up the trailer and didn't have any problems at all. You were right Jsdirt, it seems my other buddy's trailer has some issues.

We made the tournament but it was a tough day. We had a 1 1/2 hour fog delay so that kind of ruined the Top Water action. I got skunked but my buddy came in 3rd with two fish. Regardless of the outcome, you can't beat a day on the water.

Thanks again for the help and info.

Yeah, I got skunked too! My buddy who normally has 30+ fish in the boat over the course of the day landed only 3, & lost 2. Terrible for being this close to spawn time. We won't be going back to that lake again. Water temps are just hitting 60° now, so my numbers will hopefully start to go up.

I agree 100% -- a bad day on the water beats ANY day at work!

Glad you got your wiring sorted out. Take care.
