Must I use long "life oil" for the oil service indicator light to work properly. Or is regular semisynt/ synt 5/30w OK ?

Engine is a 5.3 -02

It doesn't matter what kind of of oil you use (conventional,synthetic,high-mileage,etc.)

What Rich said. You get regular Dyno oil out of the factory, and GM designed the OLM using regular as well.

Yes oils have gotten better but in the most part it the Emissions system and the fact that Fuel Injection does not wash down the cylinder walls with fuel thinning out the oil that has improved engine life. Engines before fuel injection were good for 100000- 150000 miles and now 300000-400000 miles is most likely. My 2000 Silverado 5.3 has 275000 and running strong.

If you don't believe 3000 is way too soon to be changing the oil, get a an oil analysis done and the response they come back with saying "Your kidding us, right? Changing your oil every 3000 miles!? ROFOL!! You got at least 5000-6000 more to go!" Or something like that :dunno:

Pm me with your email addy if you'd like to see a report on my Silverado, just for giggles. I plan to do another one at the next oil change, likely late this year.

I'll send it to anyone, not just OP.

i'm not going to waste my time with an oil analysis, i've been told many times i'm wasting money but peace of mind is priceless...to each their own, if you guys want to go by OLM more power to you i just don't find the need to wait for a formula to tell me my oil is spent, far too many variables that the formula could be forgetting let alone factor in the filter it dosen't keep track of

As you said, to each his own, but healthy, amicable discussion is cool.

My oil analysis indicates my filter was still good. Another good reason to do an analysis.

I actually find them interesting just because I'm a hybrid Analytical Chemistry-degrees gearhead/nurse. As a nurse practitioner, I find the changes in lab values more interesting than the first lab values. Thus, I look forward to another analysis on my truck's oil.

I would have loved to have been a fly on Dr. Shirley's shoulder as he formulated the algorithm.
