Squeak Coming From Engine Area

G-day folks

 

Did a quick search on this and couldnt find a fix so thought I would throw this one up there for the smart people.

 

Just noticed this and was hoping someone else has encountered and solved it. While I periodically have the wet belt issue (the first 15 or so seconds of running) this one is coming from engine compartment when I am moving. Say i am moving along at 10MPH and give it just a bit of gas to accelerate it starts to squeak. Give it alot and I dont hear the squeak,.

 

Initially I thought it was the body of the truck but it seems to be tied to the engine running with the truck moving.

 

If I sit and let the truck idle its fine, no squeak, ref it up and also good. put it in gear and give it the right amount of gas and its the noisiest thing going.

Realize now that this noise is all caused by belt noise with the belt slipping on the pullies. Took off the serpentine belt last night and ran the engine for a about 10 seconds and there was no noise and all the pullies turn with no binding.

 

I will go out and pick up a new one tomorrow now have a couple of questions:

 

1. Anything wrong with the AC Delco belts
   
2. Any prep work that needs to be done before putting on the new belt. IE Cleaning out the pullies or sanding them with a very fine sandpaper or even doing any prep work on the belt itself. I know before I change a Drive belt on my snowmobile I prep it so it doesnt leave a lot of crap on the clutches.

nope just throw the new one on. I would clean any dirt off the pullies with some water and a rag but other then that no prep work is needed

Not sure if anyone has encountered this one and I really hate to keep bringing this one to the top with the same symptoms, but I am certain someone has come across this issue and solved it.

 

I swapped out the two belts for new ones and the normal idle squeal is now gone when I start the truck but it still has a squeal when I am under power rolling at low speeds.

 

Examples:

 

1. I am running on the flats at low speed and barely any gas and I get a squeal,
   
2. Give it a bunch of gas and the noise is gone.
   
3. If I shut the engine off and coast its gone.
   
4. If I am sitting still in the drive way nothing, rev it up with different gas preasures, no noise
   
5. Just seems to be when I am motoring along at city speed or less.
   

Not sure what would be causing this, and I hate to start swapping parts out although the serpentine belt was due. Maybe the alternator has to work harder and is dragging a bit on the belts. The tensioner seems to be fine, I need a rachet to loosen the belt.

Might be the bearing in the idler pully, take belt off and feel the pully. If it has some play in it the bearing is starting to go and squel could be coming from there.

Does it only make the noise with the AC on or does it do it regardless?

The problem is solved, took the truck by my local mechanic today as the squeak was getting worse.

 

While I did have a problem with the belts slipping, changing the belts last night fixed that. I was only down to the squeak when we were driving along under easy power. No noise when we were coasting or accelerating.

 

About 30 seconds in the truck for a test drive and he said, sounds like U-joints to me. Sure enough a couple of U-Joints and the noise was all gone. The ole dog has a new truck again.
