I just installed 4 18" z71(2008) wheels on my 2003 after a test drive I got a CHeck engine light...anybody have a clue why? Old tires/wheels were OEM 16". Two wheel drive

Head to an AutoZone parts store and have them retrieve any codes. Then post them here. Could be related to the tires having a larger diameter or maybe just a coincidence.....

What size tire? IF you went bigger than stock, it could def. throw the SES light. Especially if you have Stabilitrak :)

16 verses 18 doesn't make a difference. It's the overall diameter of the tire that does. If you went from 32" tires to 33" tires... thats when it cause an issue. A custom program or handheld tuner can fix that up. The dealerships won't program for tire size.

Trying to get my head around why it would effect anything. If all 4 are the same size, don't see how the truck would even know they were on there. The speedo will be off if the diameter is different, but the truck has no way of even knowing the speedo is off since the location where it would check the speed is before the tires. Even if it used the abs sensors on each wheel, the speed would still match the speed at the trans or whereever it is getting the speed from. Unless there is an air speed sensor somewhere, it can't see that the speedo is off.

It would normally throw an ABS light... not the check engine light.

The reason bigger tires throw codes is because the computer does see a difference in left vs right and front vs rear wheel speed differentials when turning. The bigger tires make the computer think the sensors are giving false readings, hence your stabilitrac or ABS light will come on to let you know the system has been turned off by the computer until the differential wheel speeds are back within the necessary limits.

If you never turn and drive your truck in a straight line, then you're right, the computer would not have any clue.
