Added Console, Can I Re-key Lock?

Hey guys,

 

 

 

I added a used centre console jump seat I found online and would like to have the option of locking my valuables out of sight in the seat bottom. How hard is it to rekey to my trucks ignition key? Can I do this myself? Can any dealer or locksmith do this? How expensive would this be?

what year truck? i believe on nbs 99-07 you have to replace the entire lid/bucket assembly or have a locksmith cut a key to work with the lock.

2011, with an 08 console.

what I usually do is take apart the lock cylinder, insert the key in it and file the pins so they are now the right size for your key, now I don't know how hard it would be to do it in the center console lock though

That only works for pins that are too long, you need to remove the ones that are too short completely. Keep in mind that a lock will not stop someone that just broke into your truck. These guys remove stereos without tools.

well if some of the pins happen to be too short then just get you some longer pins and problem solved

you know I never lock the center console 'cause I know if locked they might think that there's something of value in there and pry it open and mess it all up

If I'm not mistaken that bottom compartment lock isn't specific to your ignition. If you haven't yet try your ignition key in the used console, I'm almost positive it will open.

Most locksmiths should be able to rekey the lock to work with your ignition key. You should be able to find online instructions to attempt this yourself.

 

Like some others, I fail to see the point in locking it.

Nice, I actually havent tried!! Never even thought about it! And sure, if guys want to get in it, they are getting in there, but it might be nice to protect something from someone other than theives you know!
