Did I Miss Something?

Just making sure I didnt miss anything here. Got my oil changed today and the hard working oil changing person told me that according to gm I should be using a synthetic oil. Clearly in the manual it states nothing of the sort which I stated to the person. I tried to look it up online and found some conflicting info as well as info that would suggest the persons statement is true. So anyways, did I miss something? Is gm now advising people to use synthetic oil in the 5.3 6 speed? I am aware of the price difference and fully understand, though dont agree with, the reasoning that this particular company would suggest I spend more money.

I'm guessing but the tech was probably referring to the dexos spec for the 2011 model year trucks. Most, if not all, of the dexos oils are synthetic. I think GM is "encouraging" prior year models to do the dexos thing as well, but it IS NOT required like it is on the 2011's. Unless something has changed in the last couple of days, any 5W-30 conventional or synthetic should be a ok. in your 2010 for warranty purposes. Maybe the oil change guy was thinking your truck was a 2011. :)

As vroten said, your fine using conventional 5W-30 in your 2010,The 2011-up GM vehicles require dexos spec oil which is a synthetic-blend 5W-30 oil.

ahhh ok. I missed that one... thanks guys. What was the big difference between the 11's and the 10's that required them to change from conventional to synthetics?

No difference between the 10's and 11's. GM has come out with this spec for all their vehicles.beginning with the 2011 model year. GM gets a royalty fee from oil companies for the certification. Right now the most available brands (for me) that are dexos approved are Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, and Quaker State Ultimate Durability. At this point Valvoline, Castrol, Conoco-Phillips, Chevron-Texaco and others haven't agreed to the licensing even though many of them say their synthetic products meet the spec.

There's a sticky at the top of this forum with more info.
