4x4 Light Icon Question

Hey everyone.

 

Today I went offroading and when I put it in 4x4 hi the dash icon never lit up. I was in soft sand and it kinda struggled so Im not sure if it was in 4x4. It sure felt like it when I turned, I also think I heard the hubs unlocking when I took it out of 4 wheel drive. So assuming I only have an electrical problem, where do I look to fix the illuminated icon?

Also can I check if its locked in by seeing if the front drive shaft is spinning or does it spin all the time? Thanks. 06 1500 z71

It should be easy to tell when it's in 4WD on pavement. You shouldn't engage it on dry pavement for very long, but lock it in for just a bit and you should feel and hear it plain enough with a few slow speed turns. I believe the front driveshaft and halfshafts will turn all the time regardless. By your description, you must have the manual transfer case with the shifter on the floor. Not sure about the dash idiot light not working. Maybe the bulb is burnt out...

Thanks for the reply and yes I have the manual shift on the floor. Ive been busy so I will have to try the pavement thing.

Remember the manual shift case only engages the trans-case

and the front hubs still engage electrically.
