Loving My 6 Speed Tranny

after reading so much about the issues ford is having with their 6 speed tranny, http://www.fordf150.net/forums/viewtopic.p...=80&t=99331 , I am glad I got my chevy. Sure, it consumes a little more oil than it should, but what is a little more lubricant, right? LOL

anyway, back to topic. I love the chevy 6 speed. it shifts smooth in both acceleration and deceleration. I pull a 6000 lb boat every weekend and the transmission never seems to hunt for gears. It pulls very well and I usually don't use the tow mode.

ford builds a good truck  but i'll take the bowtie before the oval anyday

I agree the 6 speed is a great trans. I very happy with mine and my 6.2 i have. Such a smooth combination. When you are towing though i would try to use the towing mode as much as possible. It will save stress on the transmission.

I hardly use the tow / haul mode in mine either because I hate how it shifts. I tow a 9,000 boat with mine and never use tow haul. I guess that's why it has a 100,000 mile warranty. Just seems as though the thing never upshifts until redline and downshifts to the point it's at redline all too often. I know it's designed to downshift upon tapping the brakes and upshift differently, but I just don't like it. Manual mode works much better for me.

I use manual mode just about every day. My commute passes through 3 different road types- back country roads where speeds are 35-45 and I keep it in 4th. The road opens up some outside of town and 55 manageable so I put it in 5th and then finally the highway it'll go into 6th. I don't like the constant gear hunting at lower speeds if you put it in drive and my way gives better throttle response. It likely costs some MPG but that isn't of much importance to me.

I'm happy with mine especially sense I "tought" it how to shift the way that I'd like it to.

Tow/Haul mode is only used when you are at, or above, 70% of the trucks towing/hauling capacity. Anything less than that, is a waste. I just use the manual mode down the 5th for the smaller loads that I've hauled with mine, so far.

To the OP, I just want your old boat, please and thank you.

Oh I'm well aware of the specs, prices and website as I've been "Dream Shopping" them for the past few months.

Unfortunantly, I just can't bring myself to spend that much money on just one toy. My bro-in-law's 18' Four Winns (yea, I know but it's cheap) just yacked the engine (4.3 carb) so I might be looking to pick that one up cheap, we'll see.

Have fun with the new one. <-100% Jealous :fume:

I know! Thanks for reminding me!! LOL.

Seriously, if I can get it right, I'll have less than $5000 into this FW WITH a brand new long block, interior touch ups, paint touch ups and stereo system install. I can pay that back into savings in a year or two and have another debt free toy. I like that better. :fume:
