That is a AIM-9 Sidewinder.  That has really gotta suck, if that was pilot error, I gotta feeling he may not be a navy pilot anymore.  

 

Hope another Hornet hadn't just taken off in front of him, those Sidewinders are heat seeking...that would kinda suck to get nail up the six by a missile from the guy taking off behind you...
