High Pitch Squeal Noise Heard Over The Speakers

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

This morning I noticed that my truck's audio system started producing a high pitched squeal whenever I use my turn blinkers or turn on the stereo. The pitch of the noise is in sync with the engine's RPMs. My truck is equipped with the Bose in dash nav headunit.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I can correct the problem?

Do you still have the OEM battery? Have you been having battery problems lately? This is a CLASSIC symptom of a bad battery - usually it creeps up to the point that one day it rises to the level that it bugs the sh*t out of you and you have to fix it...

Remember that the battery is biggest engine noise filter in the car and if it's compromised, the radio will be the first thing that picks up the noise the alternator throws out. You're hearing it from the blinkers because the Bose amp plays the blinker sound.

If you have a known good battery handy, the first thing I would try is to swap the battery. May not do anything, but it will definitely be the easiest way to diagnose it for the least amount of time invested.

Beyond that, in descending order of likelihood:

bad amp or shorted speaker (try using balance/fader to isolate all four corners to see if the noise goes away or changes)

bad head unit

bad alternator

Thank you sir for your response. It is most helpful.

My truck has been having some odd battery problems lately. My battery drained to the point it couldn't crank the engine over after about 10 minutes of having the key set to on without the engine being on in order to test some trailer lights. This also caused my trucks electrical systems to go haywire until my dad boosted it. I know that leaving the key on does sap power but I figured a good battery should last a little longer than 10 minutes. I do believe it is the OEM battery. I guess it is time to start looking at a replacement.

My wifes old toyota did that when plugged into the audio jack. New battery and everything, still a problem. Sometimes, the plug just needed to be readjusted.

I know it's an old thread. Anybody else, mine only does it when I m connected to onstar. It does a quick blip when I first fire the truck up?
